Packing our luggage has been more work than expected. It seems no matter what we do, we always end up with overweight bags. We had started sorting and packing days before now and it didn't feel like we were overpacked until we had to use a domestic flight some days ago.
On weighing our bags at the airport, it turned out we had more than the allowed weight, apparently, my scale at home was not accurate enough. We have done a semifinal packing today and we're unsure if we're within safe limit as there's no scale in this hotel.
We're allowed 2 × 23kg travel suitcases and 1 8kg hand luggage each and it's so hard fitting all our necessities into this. We barely have enough clothes as it is but we might still be overweight. One suitcase holds my clothes and some personal effects. A duffel bag holds some food and personal effects, another duffel bag has my husband's clothes and some other belongings.
The last suitcase held our African food varieties but we had to empty it and put the food in a ghanamustgo bag. The food bag immediately felt lighter as the woven bag is a weightless one. It is a better alternative to the very heavy travel suitcase that took up most of our weight.
The suitcase with my clothes is also heavy and takes a good part of the 23kg but we don't want to replace that with a ghanamustgo bag. We were cutting cost by not buying new suitcases or bags but it now looks like buying lighter ones would have been a better option. The crazy thing is I don't know what else to drop if we are overweight at the airport, we're already so underpacked. The main problem here is that the suitcase and duffel bags are heavy materials with wheels.
Our 8kg hand luggage each aren't overweight and we both have backpacks that are overpacked with the hopes that they won't be weighed at the airport. We won't be paying for excess baggage as the fees are outrageous, we will end up dropping some stuff in the empty suitcase for my brother to go back home with instead.
A lot of people usually have to throw their stuff at the airports because of weight. I’m glad you have sorted this and let’s hope that your backpack doesn’t get weighed. Lol.
Fingers crossed 🤞 🥹
Congrats on your first international flight 🤗
Packing is an art and a whole lot of practice to get it right. Suitcases weigh so much when you look and see what you actually have in them. It's a lot of trial and error and constant weighing of the bags. I would suggest a handheld digital scale for accuracy, as it's painful to lose items at the airport or have to pay excessive fees there.
I bet you're looking forward to travelling again, and just take notes so that next time it will be smoother:)))
Thank you @millycf1976 😀
Luckily, we didn't exceed our limit or lose any item.
