Around five years ago I embarked on a photography journey that would shape my passion for capturing moments in the years following. One of my first ever portrait shoot was with a good friend of mine from school, in a beautiful botanical gardens. At the time I was still finding my footing, still learning how to wield my camera, lighting, angles and hardest of all, directing a subject.
The gardens were a gorgeous backdrop for this nature-loving friend. I was so nervous, hands shaking for most of the day as I didn't want to mess this up and desperately wanted to capture her beauty and essence as a person and still find my photography style at the same time. Looking back at these photos brings a smile to my face as I can see very clearly how much I have grown in skill as well as confidence.
These photos hold such a special place in my heart as it taught me the importance of confidence behind the lens. It also instilled in me that I much prefer documentary style photography as there is something so uniquely special about those candid in-the-moment moments that cannot be staged or generated but rather organically captured by an observant eye and quick finger on the shoot button.
This photo above was/is my favourite shot from this shoot. The light, the pose, the background, I am just quite proud of it.
As you can tell, I also played around with different editing techniques as well, not sure what I liked more.
