Finally, trees and bushes turn green, and spring photos are more and more colorful. However, I miss summer and the full lushness of nature very much. Winter kept us in check for a long time - there was a snowstorm in Krakow last Monday! As they say: April weather, rain, and sunshine both together.
Today, I want to go back to last year's holidays, which I spent on the Biebrza River, in the northeast of Poland (Podlaskie Voivodeship). Almost the entire river and the surrounding areas form a national park (more than 40% are wetlands). In one of my posts from last year, I mentioned that Biebrza is one of the last untouched rivers in Europe and one of the major wildlife sanctuaries on the continent*. It is a multi-channel river - it floods every year, hence the vast wetlands around.
This part of Poland is less populated than the center or the south. Here you can truly take a break from people and civilization. You can drive for hours on gravel roads, staring at the gentle horizon. The landscape may seem flat and uniform, but it is also mesmerizing. Traveling through this land is like meditation. Sooner or later, you come across a local road to nowhere that sucks you in for hours.
The Biebrza River is vast (I know it's a relative term), wild, and has a quiet current, ideal for canoeing trips.
When there is no wind, its surface is like a mirror. Hear only the sounds of nature - birds singing and the flapping of dragonflies' wings. No sign of civilization. I had the opportunity to canoe here - I passed only two wooden rafts during the 4-hour trip. Amazing experience.
The entire valley is wet; water stands in the fields and meadows located several kilometers away from the river.
Sometimes you can't see it because it lurks beneath the thick grass. Ones I was seduced by the green meadow, and I returned to the car with wet shoes :)
It wasn't my last visit to Podlasie for sure. Two years ago, I fell in love with the Białowieża Forest. A year later, I was charmed by the "Polish Amazon." I want more! In the south of Poland, where I live, the terrain is slightly different - uplands, hills, and mountains. I love them, but they are well known to me. Sometimes I need to feast my eyes on something different.
I don't plan a long vacation this year; I have a lot of projects and plans to do. So I'll be watching photos from previous trips and dreaming about the next ones :) It doesn't bother me; many beautiful places in my area are perfect for short breaks. It will be the summer of quick trips ;)
