This time, I would like to talk about "Varanasi", which affected me deeply.
Varanasi, also known as "Benares", is engraved in my memory with its cremation ceremony, Aarti ceremonies, and the magnificent Ganges river.
Varanasi, located in eastern India in the state of Uttar Pradesh, is located on the banks of the Ganges river, very close to Nepal.
Varanasi shows us how intertwined life and death are, and turns our thoughts and feelings upside down. As we were horrified by what we saw, they calmly performed their funeral rituals. While we were watching them with astonished and curious looks, I couldn't help wondering if we were disturbing them. After all, they have pain.
Varanasi, which has a history of 5000 years, is known as the city of Shiva, the god of death, and the capital of death.
There are 84 "Ghats" of various sizes here. Ghats are placed along the Ganges River where the burial and cremation of the dead are held, religious ceremonies take place, and people are washed. The place is open to the public, you can visit for free.
You should stay a minimum of 2-3 days in this mystical city. We stayed for 1 night and 2 days, but I can say that it was not enough.
You should choose your hotel very well in Varanasi. If it is near the center, you can easily participate in the "Aarti" ceremonies that are held at night. You want to feel comfortable and clean in your hotel after the spiritual shock, dust, ash, crowd, and chaos you have experienced all day long.
Tuk-tuks are very popular in city transportation in Varanasi. They can be bicycles or motorized. You can reach the center by taxi from the airport. Unfortunately, there was no Uber.
Among the things to do in Varanasi, you can visit the ghats and witness the events that take place there. My advice is, don't take selfies.
Varanasi is very important to Hindus, as for Muslims it is very important to go to Varanasi and bathe in the Ganges river, participate in Aarti ceremonies and even die here. They believe that when they die here, their souls will be set free.
There are two main Ghats that are cremated. One of them is 'Harishchandra Ghat' and the other is 'Manikarnika Ghat'.
They carry the dead on their shoulders, bring the dead, wash them in the Ganges, and wrap them in a shroud. Then they place it among the wood they bought, start burning it, and wait for 4 hours until it is finished. Of course, they complete the ritual by leaving their ashes in the Ganges river.
Pregnant women, babies, and people who have been bitten by a cobra snake cannot be burned because they are considered sacred. They are wrapped in a shroud and tied to a stone and dropped into the deepest waters of the Ganges.
Aarti ceremonies are also extremely important to Hindus and are held early in the morning and every evening. These ceremonies are performed for the dead and the gods. The evening starts around 18.30 and lasts for 2 hours. For beautiful photos, you should go very early and get a seat.
The most famous of the Aarti ceremonies are held at Dashashwmedh Ghat, which they call Main Ghat, and we chose this. But Assi Ghat is also said to be beautiful.
In addition, one of the most important things to do here is to take a tour of the Ganges river in the first light of the morning. We started around 5 in the morning and it took about 2 hours.
Witnessing the sunrise on the river, looking across the ghats and observing the religious rituals of the Hindus, and watching them bathe in the Ganges was a great experience for us.
Luckily the weather was perfect and there was no fog. We witnessed such beautiful views that it was truly unforgettable.
There are also many temples in the city. You can also visit them. (Some of them; Bharat Mata Temple, Monkey Temple, Golden Temple, Sarnath Temple...)
Varanasi trip was the most interesting trip I have ever done. Thanks my life...

Bu kez de, beni derinden etkileyen ‘’Varanasi’den ’’ bahsetmek istiyorum.
Varanasi diğer adı ile ‘’Benares’’, ölü yakma seremonisi, Aarti törenleri ve müthiş Ganj nehri ile kazındı hafızama.
Hindistan’ın doğusunda, Uttar Pradeş eyaletinde bulunan Varanasi, Ganj nehri kenarında Nepal’e çok yakın bir konumda bulunmaktadır.
Varanasi, size yaşam ile ölümün, aslında ne kadar iç içe geçmiş olduğunu gösterip, duygu ve düşüncelerinizi bir anda altüst ediyor. Gördüklerimiz bizi dehşete düşürürken, onlar gayet sakin bir şekilde cenaze ritüellerini yerine getiriyorlardı. Biz şaşkın ve meraklı bakışlarla onları seyrederken, onları rahatsız ediyor muyuz acaba diye düşünmekten de kendimi alamadım. Sonuçta acıları var.
5000 yıllık tarihi bir geçmişe sahip olan Varanasi, ölüm tanrısı Şiva'nın şehri, ölümün başşehri olarak bilinir.

Varanasi’de şehir içi ulaşımda tuk-tuklar çok revaçta. Bisikletli ya da motorlu olabiliyorlar. Havaalanından da taksi ile merkeze ulaşabilirsiniz. Maalesef Uber yoktu.
Varanasi’de yapılacaklar arasında en başta ghat’ları ziyaret ederek, orada yaşanan olaylara, ölü yakma seremonisine tanık olabilirsiniz. Benden tavsiye, sakın selfie çekmeyin.
Hindular için Varanasi çok önemlidir, şöyle ki, müslümanlar için Kabe'ye gitmek ne demekse, onlar için de Varanasi'ye gidip Ganj nehrinde yıkanmak, Aarti törenlerine katılmak ve hatta burada ölebilmek son derece önemlidir. Burada öldüklerinde ruhlarının özgürlüğe kavuşacaklarına inanıyorlar.
Ölü yakılan başlıca iki tane Ghat var. Bunlardan biri 'Harishchandra Ghat', diğeri de 'Manikarnika Ghat'.
Ölü sahipleri omuzlarında taşıyarak ölüyü getirip, Ganj'da yıkıyorlar ve kefene sarıyorlar. Sonrasında satın aldıkları odunların arasına yerleştirip, yakmaya başlıyorlar ve bitene kadar 4 saat başında bekliyorlar. Tabii ki küllerini de Ganj nehrine bırakarak, ritüeli tamamlıyorlar.
Hamile kadınlar, bebekler ve kobra yılanı sokmuş olan insanlar kutsal sayıldıkları için, inançları gereği yakılamıyor. Direk kefene sarılıp, taş bağlanarak Ganj'ın en derin sularına bırakıyorlar.
Aarti törenleri de, Hindular için son derece önemli olup, sabah erken saatlerde ve her akşam yapılmakta. Bu törenler ölüler ve tanrılar için yapılıyor. Akşam olan 18.30 gibi başlıyor ve 2 saat sürüyor. Güzel fotoğraflar için çok erken giderek yer kapmalısınız.
Aarti törenlerinin en ünlüsü, Main Ghat dedikleri Dashashwmedh Ghat'da yapılıyor ve biz bunu tercih ettik. Ancak Assi Ghat'ta da güzel olduğu söyleniyor.
Ayrıca burada yapılması gereken en önemli şeylerden bir diğeri, sabahın ilk ışıklarında Ganj nehrinde tura çıkmak. Sabah 5 civarında çıkıyorsunuz ve yaklaşık 2 saat sürüyor.
Nehirde güneşin doğuşuna şahit olmak, ghatlara karşıdan bakmak ve Hinduların dini ritüellerini gözlemleyip, Ganj'da yıkanmalarını seyretmek, müthiş bir deneyim oldu bizim için.
Şansımıza hava da süperdi ve sis yoktu. Öyle güzel manzaralara tanık olduk ki, unutulmazdı gerçekten.
Ayrıca şehirde çok fazla tapınak mevcut. Bunları da ziyaret edebilirsiniz. (Bunlardan bazıları ; Bharat Mata Tapınağı, Maymun Tapınağı, Altın Tapınak, Sarnath Tapınağı...)
