RL-30SL Rgb Led Stick (Tube) - Test Review

in Photography Lovers4 months ago (edited)

So after the first fail i went on another run. And i learned why everything was out of focus. It is the new tech that has failed me. On older lenses when you put our lens on manual, it stays in place as long as you don't move the ring. On these new lenses if you turn off the camera lens goes to some kind of default position.
And as a real amateur lighpainter that i am, i was using the built-in intervalometer set on infinity number of photos. And to stop it from taking photos i just turn it off, because i don't know is there a different way. And i don't have a remote trigger (i do, i just didn't test it on R6, no idea is it working). So when i stopped it for the first time by turning the camera off, everything after that was out of focus :D

Anyone know how to stop the built-in intervalometer and not turning off the camera?

So back to RL-30SL Rgb Led Stick Light. You can see that manufacturer really took its time to name this product. RL-30SL, how inspiring. I think the 30 in the name is the length of the light, 30cm.

Comparing it to Godox tube lights, the plastic feels a bit cheaper (i have Godox TL60) on RL-30SL light, but not that much. Godox has a display to show you mods you are in and strength. RL-30SL has 6 buttons. That is it. I would guess that Godox is also brighter, judging by the one i have (it is double the size but much much brighter). I don't even know how to do scientific light accuracy, but i would say Godox is most probably more accurate in light representation.

But Godox is 130$ and RL-30SL is 9$

Buttons are decent. One useful thing they did is giving a dedicated button for Daylight/Warm Color and another one to circle through all the other colors and modes. Daylight/Warm Color mode is much stronger than all the others. The RGB is not strong enough for any filming use. It would probably work as a light in the background on a shelf or something.

But for lightpainting it works pretty well. It is light, colors look ok. I was doing this for over an hour and after that filmed some video on full power and the battery was still not empty (there is no indicator, so no idea how close to empty it was)

Two buttons are just for Power up and Power down. One is for Turning it on and off, and the last one is the music/sound option. I think it circles modes and flashes with the sound. I just clicked it to see if it works. It did.

Overall RL-30SL Rgb Led Stick Light exceeded my expectations. I will have to use it for a while to see how the battery will hold after some time, but it looks like i will have some fun with it.

It looks great for a 9$ light.

A "default position" for focus sounds really crazy. Most of the time I use manual lenses. Besides the focus I can change the aperture during exposure for different light sources. F 4 for a dim RGB light and f16 for fireworks and so on.

i ordered a longer one (50cm) for 15$. will see how lucky i will be with that one. One positive of it being a cheap built is it is light. Godox is pretty heavy.

I kinda started my photography with playing with long exposures. Maybe this cheap lights will get me to do more of it.

I would never thought about the focus doing that if i didn't see it. First night i got home with everything out of focus :) i am not even sure do all RF mount lenses do that, the 35mm is doing it for sure.

manual lenses make sense for this, manual aperture is quite handy. only manual lens i have at the moment is Helios 44 and the front element is reversed :) I do need to test out the old trigger.

I use some cheap 50 cm RGB lights (20€) for some years. I can't remember the name of it, but they work great. Maybe you should buy a bright torch with high CRI and a nice beam too. It is much easier and better for illuminating large rooms and landscapes and cars.

Besides the Helios 44 I use the Mir 1b. It is a great 37mm lens with a similar price to the Helios. The 12 mm Laowa is a great lens too but very expensive (1000 €).

It's always nice when people are infected with the light painting virus. 😉

those cheap ones usually have some random names :)

i was checking out Mir 1b years ago, it was a bit more expensive and harder to find than helios 44. At one time Helios 44 was everywhere and could be bought for 15$.

Light painting was always fun for me, as the results are something you "can't see with naked eye"

I'm not a professional photographer, but these photos look pretty cool! Using a light that costs only $9 gives even more appreciation! 🙂

Good job! Do you sell these kinds of photos somewhere?

i did try stock few years ago. i think i have 15$ there :) this could probably go there, as we say "they don't ask for bread" so no harm putting it :D

The photography is beautiful and is decorated with lights, the process is amazing

You did a very good job
The light is really sharp and beautified the car
Love it!

Thanks :)

Of course all these pictures are very beautiful, you have taken a lot of effort and beautifully drawn them, that's why their lights look so beautiful.

I really don’t know much a about lights and their prices but the lightnings look very good
You did well with them

this was really cheap. pro light are over 100$

Thanks
