SHAPES IN THE MUD

I don't know where exactly I was. Somewhere on the coast. The northwestern coast of Istra. Near Savudria, maybe. Or Umag.

The flat landscape didn't look too interesting in the midday sun ...

... so my attention got caught by smaller details in the shallow, muddy inlet in front of me. The movement of the water in the intertidal zone created fantastic landscapes. It was like observing some alien planet from the safety of a spaceship in the orbit.

Here you can take a look at the bay from an ordinary angle. Not too bad but pretty unsatisfying if your fantasy requires something otherworldly, for a change.

In collaboration with the light, the currents in the shallows created a transparent, shape-shifting creature that looked like something out of the 1989 movie The Abys.

Even from a more regular perspective, if you zoom in enough, the small parchment of the ordinary landscape becomes a different kind of world. A seemingly endless muddy wilderness.

But the most interesting stuff is revealed if you take a look from above.

Some shots look a bit like satellite images.

Here you can see a fragment of some sea snail shell stuck among the coastal rocks.

I hope that these four shots can speak for themselves because when it comes to writing, I'm running out of ideas.

You can feed your eyes with more mud in this photograph. It's a nice, salty mud, very soft and squishy.

When I collected enough of these abstract compositions ...

... and micro dunes, I walk towards the town or village, don't remember what exactly the nearest settlement was.

All that happened in February. The year was 2010. It was sunny but pretty cold and the palm trees were protected and packaged in some white material. The gardening intervention ended up looking like an art project. The plants became sculptures that gave a slightly surreal touch to the seaside promenade.
