ABANDONED FARMHOUSE ON A STARRY NIGHT

Last week we had the rare opportunity to see the northern lights in our area. I actually wanted to photograph the northern lights last Saturday after a birthday party. I chose a location that I'd had on my list for a long time. It was a dilapidated farmhouse about 15 km from our house. I often cycle past there during my training sessions. The owner had mowed down the wild herbs around the ruins two weeks earlier. The adjacent field had been newly cultivated. You can park your car right next to it. The sky was open and starry. The new moon was only a few days old. Ideal! I thought to myself. If not today, then when? So I packed my tripod, photo backpack and a couple of flashlights into the car and drove to this photo spot with my wife Geane.

Letzte Woche gab es die seltene Gelegenheit, in unserer Gegend Polarlichter zu sehen. Eigentlich wollte ich letzten Samstag nach einer Geburtstagsparty noch die Polarlichter fotografieren. Dafür suchte ich mir eine Location aus, die ich schon lange auf meinem Zettel hatte. Es handelt sich um ein verfallendes Bauernhaus, welches ca. 15km von unserem Haus entfernt ist. Dort fahre ich oft mit dem Fahrrad während meiner Trainingsrunden vorbei. Der Besitzer hatte zwei Wochen zuvor die Wildkräuter um die Ruine abgemäht. Das angrenzende Feld war neu bestellt worden. Das Auto kann man direkt daneben Parken. Der Himmel war offen und Sternenklar. Der Neumond war erst wenige Tage vorbei. Ideal! Dachte ich mir. Wenn nicht heute, wann dann? Also packte ich Stativ, Fotorucksack und ein paar Taschenlampen ins Auto und fuhr mit meiner Frau Geane zu diesem Fotospot.

Once there, I noticed that the nettles had grown almost waist-high again due to the favorable weather conditions. Okay, that wasn't a problem for me. The herbs couldn't harm my outdoor clothing. However, I couldn't encourage Geane to go in there. 😆
That wasn't really necessary either. As I had planned the shot without a model. I set up the camera next to the road on the hard shoulder. It was now almost two o'clock in the morning and there were still a few cars driving along the remote road. However, they could be heard long before the headlights were visible in the picture. I covered the lens with my cap for this time.

Dort angekommen, stellte ich fest, dass die Brennnesseln auf Grund der günstigen Wetterbedingungen schon wieder fast Hüfthoch gewachsen sind. Ok, das war für mich kein Problem. Meiner Outdoor -Bekleidung können die Kräuter nichts anhaben. Geane konnte ich allerdings nicht ermuntern dort hinein zu gehen. 😆 Das war eigentlich auch nicht nötig. Da ich die Aufnahme ohne Modell geplant hatte. Die Kamera stellte ich neben der Straße auf dem Seitenstreifen auf. Es war mittlerweile schon fast zwei Uhr Morgens und es fuhren immer noch vereinzelt Autos über die abgelegene Straße. Sie waren jedoch lange vorher zu hören, bevor das Scheinwerferlicht im Bild zu sehen war. Für diese Zeit deckte ich das Objektiv mit meiner Mütze zu.

It was just our bad luck that we didn't get to see any auroras that night. I was one night too late. 😐 So I took a few star trails. As you can see in the cover photo. I pointed the camera at the North Star. The ruin is perfectly aligned north-south. I would have preferred the perspective shown in the second picture under the North Star. You just have to die a death.

Unser Pech war es nur, dass wir in dieser Nacht keine Polarlichter zu sehen bekamen. Ich war eine Nacht zu spät dran. 😐 Also nahm ich ein paar Sternspuren auf. Wie auf dem Titelbild zu sehen, richtete ich die Kamera dafür auf den Nordstern aus. Die Ruine steht in perfekter Nord-Süd-Ausrichtung. Ich hätte lieber die Perspektive wie auf dem zweiten Bild unter dem Nordstern gehabt. Einen Tod muss man eben sterben.

I didn't find the ruin between two trees so appealing because too little of the starry sky was visible. So I adjusted the camera so that I pushed the dead tree on the left into the picture and had a clear view of the sky. Now I just had to make the stars dance.

Die Ruine zwischen zwei Baumen fand ich nicht so reizvoll, weil zu wenig vom Sternenhimmel zu sehen war. Also richtete ich die Kamera so aus, dass ich den toten Baum links ins Bild schob und den Blick frei auf den Himmel hatte. Jetzt mußte ich nur noch die Sterne tanzen lassen.

Below is a picture with a shooting star. You can make a wish. 😉 But it was no use: the auroras didn't want to show themselves that night, so I stopped the action at three o'clock in the morning.

As always at this point, it remains to list the tools used. This is very easy in this case. I illuminated the building with an EMISAR DM18 on the lowest setting. I illuminated the inside of the ruins with a CONVOY S2+ with a red LED. Well, it wasn't really possible to illuminate it because the building is full of undergrowth.

Unten zeige ich ein Bild mit Sternschnuppe. Da darf man sich was wünschen. 😉 Hat aber nichts genutzt: die Polarlichter wollten sich in dieser Nacht nicht zeigen, deshalb brach ich die Aktion um drei Uhr Morgens ab.

Bleibt noch, wie immer an dieser Stelle, die eingesetzten Tools aufzuzählen. Das ist in diesem Fall sehr einfach. Das Gebäude beleuchtete ich mit einer EMISAR DM18 auf niedrigster Stufe. Das Innere der Ruine leuchtete ich mit einer CONVOY S2+ mit roter LED aus. Naja, ausleuchten war da nicht wirklich möglich, denn die Bude steht voll mit Gestrüpp.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Das sind wunderschöne Aufnahmen geworden.
Die Polarlichter sind leider nicht immer und überall gleich zu sehen gewesen und warten nicht auf uns 😉

Danke! Das Bild hatte ich schon lange vorher ohne Polarlichter geplant. Die Polarlichter wären noch eine zusätzliche Option. Immerhin hat mich diese Option dazu gebracht, die Idee endlich umzusetzen.
