Light Painting, Cars and Motorbikes Part Three

Hello HIVEs!

At the beginning of the year, I reported on a holiday trip to Uruguay. At the turn of the year, we rented a holiday home in El Eden for a few days. On the 11ha property, my friend Rodrigo and I had a lot of fun photographing at night. There was hardly any light pollution, as this area is very sparsely populated.

Among other things, there was a Ford Model A pickup truck on this lot. The vehicle was not in the best condition. After all, it was standing unprotected on the lawn and exposed to the weather. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the crank to start the engine, otherwise I would have tried to take the old-timer for a spin, because everything under the bonnet seemed to be complete. Finally, I decided to set the vehicle in motion virtually, as can be seen on the cover picture.

Anfang des Jahres berichtete ich von einem Urlaubstrip nach Uruguay. Um die Jahreswende mieteten wir in El Eden für ein paar Tage ein Ferienhaus. Auf dem 11ha großen Grundstück hatten mein Freund Rodrigo und ich Nachts jede Menge Spass beim Fotografieren. Lichtverschmutzung gab es dort kaum, da dieses Gebiet nur sehr dünn besiedelt ist.

Auf diesem Grundstück stand unter anderem ein Ford Modell A Pickup. Das Fahrzeug befand sich nicht im besten Zustand. Schließlich stand es schutzlos auf der Wiese und war der Witterung ausgesetzt. Leider war die Kurbel zum anwerfen des Motors nicht auffindbar, sonst hätte ich mal versucht, eine kleine Runde mit dem Oldtimer zu drehen, denn unter der Haube schien noch alles vollständig vorhanden zu sein. Schließlich entschloss ich mich, das Fahrzeug virtuell in Bewegung zu versetzen, wie auf dem Titelbild zu sehen.

The Making Of

I had the idea of creating the impression of movement by drawing lines around the Ford. I used a pixel stick for this. I chose different programmes and colours on the pixelstick and moved next to the car from front to back and back. I illuminated the car itself with a torch (NOCTIGON DM11). Below I show a picture from the set. In the background you can see the bright moon.

Ich hatte die Idee, durch das Zeichnen von Linien um den Ford herum, den Eindruck einer Bewegung entstehen zu lassen. Dafür setzte ich einen Pixelstick ein. Ich wählte verschiedene Programme und Farben am Pixelstick und bewegte mich neben dem Fahrzeug von vorn nach hinten und zurück. Das Auto selbst beleuchtete ich mit einer Taschenlampe (NOCTIGON DM11). Unten zeige ich ein Bild vom Set. Im Hintergrund ist der helle Mond zu erkennen.

The Set

The realisation of my idea did not work on the first try. In the following picture, I exposed my hand on the headlights. Of course, this was not supposed to happen. Besides, the traces of the moon and some other light came into the picture. The moon should actually be painted over by light traces.

Die Umsetzung meiner Idee klappte nicht beim ersten Versuch. Im folgenden Bild habe ich meine Hand an den Scheinwerfern mit belichtet. Das sollte natürlich nicht passieren. Ausserdem sind die Spuren vom Mond und noch irgendeinem anderen Licht ins Bild gekommen. Der Mond sollte eigentlich durch Lichtspuren übermalt werden.

First I tried to put the car in the right light. The grass should not appear in the final picture. Later I let this area disappear in the darkness.

Zuerst probierte ich das Auto ins rechte Licht zu setzen. Das Gras sollte im finalen Bild nicht erscheinen. Diesen Bereich ließ ich später in der Dunkelheit verschwinden.

Then the vehicle still needed a driver. In this case, a female driver. So I put Geane behind the wheel. That wasn't quite so easy. I had to search the vehicle for snakes, spiders and other small animals and line the seats with blankets before she agreed to get into the Ford as a model. Besides, it was New Year's Eve, so we had to toast the new year with champagne beforehand. After all the rituals were done, Geane climbed into the car to finish the final photo of the night.

Dann brauchte das Gefährt ja noch einen Fahrer. In diesem Fall eine Fahrerin. Dafür setzte ich Geane ans Steuer. Das war nicht ganz so einfach. Ich musste das Fahrzeug erst nach Schlangen, Spinnen und anderen kleinen Tierchen durchsuchen und die Sitze mit Decken auskleiden, bevor sie sich bereit erklärte, als Modell in den Ford zu steigen. Ausserdem war ja Silvesternacht, da mussten wir vorher noch mit Sekt auf das neue Jahr anstoßen. Nachdem alle Rituale vollzogen worden waren, stieg Geane in den Wagen, um das finale Foto der Nacht fertig zu stellen.

The Ford-Modell AA

In the following two pictures I show the Ford in daylight. It is the Ford model AA, which was built from 1928 - 1931. Powered by a 40hp, 3.3L in-line four-cylinder engine, the vehicle reached a top speed of 104 km/h. Over 4 million Model A cars were built in various variants. This makes it very likely that you will still come across a Ford Model A today.

Auf den folgenden zwei Bildern zeige ich den Ford bei Tageslicht. Es handelt sich um das Ford-Modell AA, welches von 1928 - 1931 gebaut wurde. Motorisiert mit einem 40PS, 3.3L Vierzylinder-Reihenmotor brachte es das Fahrzeug auf eine Spitzengeschwindigkeit von 104 km/h. In verschiedenen Varianten wurden vom Model A über 4 Millionen Fahrzeuge gebaut. Damit ist die Wahrscheinlichkeit groß, einem Ford - Modell A auch noch heute zu begegnen.

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
