Hello HIVEs!

Today the third and final part of the light painting follows on the cycle track in Bielefeld. I had prepared and sketched many ideas for this evening. Unfortunately it was not possible to realize all of the ideas in such a short time.

Heute folgt der dritte und letzte Teil der Lichtmalerei auf der Radrennbahn in Bielefeld. Für diesen Abend hatte ich viele Ideen vorbereitet und skizziert. Leider war es nicht möglich in der kurzen Zeit alle Ideen zu verwirklichen.

The cover photo was created in collaboration with @gunnarheilmann.
I called it cardio. Somehow I always combine cycling with cardio training. 🚴‍♂️💓
In order not to give myself a crooked back when realizing the image idea, I mounted a flashlight with a blue color filter and an aperture on a tripod rod with a clamp. This meant I was able to carry out the painting work on the racetrack while walking upright. As soon as I left the camera's recording range, Gunnar began illuminating the scene with a flashlight.

Das Titelbild entstanden in Zusammenarbeit mit @gunnarheilmann . Ich habe es Cardio genannt. Irgendwie bringe ich Fahrradfahren immer mit Cardiotraining zusammen. 🚴‍♂️💓 Um mir bei der Realisierung der Bildidee keinen krummen Rücken zu holen, montierte ich eine Taschenlampe mit blauen Farbfilter und einer Blende an einem Stativ-Stab mit einer Klemme. Dadurch war ich in der Lage, die Malerarbeiten auf der Rennbahn aufrecht gehend zu performen. Sobald ich den Aufnahmebereich der Kamera verlassen hatte, begann Gunnar die Szene mit einer Taschenlampe zu belichten.

The pictures above and below show the race track. To show off the surface of the web, I exposed it at an acute angle with a NOCTICON DM11.

Die Bilder oben und unten zeigen die Rennstrecke. Um die Oberfläche der Bahn zur Geltung zu bringen, belichtete ich sie in einem spitzen Winkel mit einer NOCTICON DM11.

After I discussed racing in the last posts, today I would like to briefly describe the architecture of the racetrack in addition to the light painting:

The project was planned by the renowned architect and ex-racing driver Clemens Schürmann.
Groundbreaking took place in October 1950 and the inaugural race took place on June 14, 1953.
The 333.3m long track was built without longitudinal or transverse joints. The seamless prestressed concrete technology was realized through a sophisticated construction of a steel skeleton. This promised good driving comfort and new speed records. Even today, the Bielefeld cycle track is one of the fastest tracks in the world.
The curves have an inclination of over 46°. The track is surrounded by stands that rise six meters above the interior. The stands offered space for 9,000 standing and 6,000 seated. A floodlight system ensured sufficient lighting for evening and night events.

Today the cycle track is one of the monuments of the city of Bielefeld and is preserved by the support association founded in 2014.

Nachdem ich in den Letzten Posts auf den Rennsport eingegangen bin, möchte ich heute neben der Lichtmalerei kurz die Architektur der Rennbahn beschreiben:

Geplant wurde das Projekt vom renommierten Architekten und Ex-Rennfahrer Clemens Schürmann.
Der erste Spatenstich erfolgte im Oktober 1950 und das Eröffnungsrennen fand am 14. Juni 1953 statt.
Die 333,3m lange Bahn wurde ohne Längs- und Querfugen gebaut. Die fugenlose Spannbetontechnik wurde durch eine anspruchsvolle Konstruktion eines stählernen Skeletts realisiert. Dadurch versprach man sich einen guten Fahrkomfort und neue Geschwindigkeitsrekorde. Noch heute zählt die Radrennbahn Bielefeld zu den schnellsten Bahnen Weltweit.
Die Kurven weisen eine Neigung von über 46° auf. Die Bahn ist von Tribünen umgeben, die sich sechs Meter über den Innenraum erheben. Die Tribünen boten Platz für 9.000 Steh- und 6.000 Sitzplätze. Eine Flutlichtanlage sorgte für ausreichende Beleuchtung bei Abend- und Nachtveranstaltungen.

Heute zählt die Radrennbahn zu den Denkmälern der Stadt Bielefeld und wird vom 2014 gegründeten Förderverein erhalten.

Before we realized the cardio image, Hans, Gunnar and I experimented with the shadow of a racing bike. I had previously placed the bike on the racetrack using a tripod leg as support. Now it was a matter of finding a perspective in which the tripod was hidden by the bike. In the two pictures above you can see the support either as a shadow or directly on the seat post. It's often the little things that require a lot of patience from me. 🤨

Bevor wir das Cardio-Bild realisierten, experimentierten Hans, Gunnar und ich mit dem Schatten eines Rennrades herum. Das Fahrrad hatte ich zuvor mit einem Stativbein als Stütze auf die Rennbahn gestellt. Jetzt ging es darum, eine Perspektive zu finden, bei der das Stativ vom Fahrrad verdeckt wird. Auf den beiden Bildern oben sieht man den Support entweder als Schatten oder direkt an der Sattelstütze. Es sind oft die Kleinigkeiten, die mir sehr viel Geduld abfordern. 🤨

In the picture above I show some of the club members in the tunnel that leads to the racetrack. Walking through the tunnel and then back into the light with a view of the racetrack creates a very special, heroic feeling. How must the athletes feel when they enter the racetrack with their bikes in front of full stands? Gunnar and I tried to express this feeling in the following picture.

Oben im Bild zeige ich einige der Vereinsmitglieder im Tunnel, der auf die Rennbahn führt. Durch den Tunnel- und dann mit Blick auf die Rennbahn wieder ins Licht zu schreiten, erzeugt ein ganz besonderes, heroisches Gefühl. Wie müssen sich die Sportler fühlen, wenn sie mit ihren Rädern vor voll besetzten Tribünen die Rennbahn betreten? Dieses Gefühl versuchten Gunnar und ich im folgenden Bild auszudrücken.

Hans was the model for this picture. Using a small fog machine I tried to fill the area behind the model with fog. I didn't really succeed because a constant draft of wind carried the mist out of the tunnel. Gunnar then set the kick light while I threw some light onto the model from the front with a flashlight.

Hans stand uns für diese Bild Modell. Mit einer kleinen Nebelmaschine versuchte ich den Bereich hinter dem Model mit Nebel zu füllen. Das gelang mir nicht wirklich, weil ein permanenter Windzug den Dunst aus dem Tunnel trug. Gunnar hat dann das Kicklicht gesetzt, während ich von vorn mit einer Taschenlampe etwas Licht auf das Modell warf.

Ich hoffe, euch hat der Ausflug auf die Radrennbahn gefallen und wir sehen uns nächsten Sonntag hier auf HIVE wieder. Also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
