Light Painting, Reflection Or Camera Rotation?

I had planned a photo spot on my journey through southern Brazil on the way from São Bonifácio to Alfredo Wagner. A sandy track leads to the small village of Taquaras in the Rancho Queimado district in the Serra Catarinense. Time seems to have stood still here. The traditional strawberry festival takes place in Rancho Queimado every year, usually between November and December. On hot days, you can also hike to one of the many waterfalls. There is also the former country house of Hercílio Luz, the former governor of Santa Catarina. Today there is a museum in this building. But I was interested in the petrol station in the village.

Einen Fotospot auf der Reise durch Südbrasilien hatte ich auf dem Weg von São Bonifácio nach Alfredo Wagner eingeplant. Über eine Sandpiste erreicht man den kleinen Ort Taquaras im Distrikt Rancho Queimado in der Serra Catarinense. Hier scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein. Auf Rancho Queimado findet jedes Jahr das traditionelle Erdbeerfest statt, meist zwischen November und Dezember. An heißen Tagen kann man auch zu einem der vielen Wasserfälle wandern. Sonst gibt es hier noch das ehemalige Landhaus von Hercílio Luz, dem ehemaligen Gouverneur von Santa Catarina. Heute befindet sich ein Museum in diesem Gebäude. Mich interessierte aber die Tankstelle im Ort.

The Location

Yes, a petrol station! - the town's most famous attraction. In 1959, Teófilo Schütz decided to close the petrol station he had opened ten years earlier, which operated with a hand pump, in order to sign a contract with the American company Texaco. It was the most modern petrol station in the region, with a semi-automatic pump and a washing ramp. The following picture shows one of the old TEXACO petrol pumps. The articulated lorries loaded with logs stopped here to refuel before heading to the coast. The name "Schütz" can be traced back to the German colonisation of this region. The German language is still widely spoken in this part of Brazil. I was able to communicate in German in every shop or restaurant. I found that very pleasant.

Ja, eine Tankstelle! - die berühmteste Attraktion des Ortes. 1959 beschloss Teófilo Schütz, seine zehn Jahre zuvor eröffnete Tankstelle, die mit einer Handpumpe arbeitete, zu schließen, um einen Vertrag mit der amerikanischen Firma Texaco zu unterzeichnen. Es war die modernste Tankstelle der Region, mit einer halbautomatischen Zapfsäule und einer Waschrampe. Im folgenden Bild zeige ich eine der alten TEXACO- Zapfsäulen. Hier hielten die mit Holzstämmen beladenen Sattelschlepper an, um zu tanken, bevor sie an die Küste fuhren. Der Name "Schütz" ist auf die deutsche Kolonialisierung dieser Region zurückzuführen. In diesem Teil Brasiliens ist die deutsche Sprache noch sehr weit verbreitet. In jedem Geschäft oder Restaurant konnte ich auf deutsch kommunizieren. Das fand ich sehr angenehm.

But now to the actual topic. Of course, I had planned the photo shoot beforehand. As I was visiting this location in daylight, I only had one camera rotation in mind. It should look like a reflection. To achieve this, I mounted a polarising filter, a graduated filter and an ND filter in front of the lens. I chose the camera setting so that the petrol pumps were in the centre of the picture. I would have liked to have photographed the petrol station from a greater distance. As the main road ran directly in front of it, the traffic did not allow this option. So the following perspective was the only compromise left.

Aber jetzt zum eigentlichen Thema. Natürlich hatte ich vorher das Foto-Shooting geplant. Da ich diese Location bei Tageslicht besuchte kam für mich nur eine Kamerarotation in Frage. Es sollte wie eine Spiegelung aussehen. Dafür montierte ich einen Polarisationsfilter, einen Verlaufsfilter und einen ND-Filter vor das Objektiv. Die Kameraeinstellung wählte ich so, dass sich die Zapfsäulen in der Mitte des Bildes befanden. Gern hätte ich die Tankstelle von einer größeren Entfernung aufgenommen. Da die Fernverkehrsstrasse direkt davor verlief, ließ der Verkehr diese Option nicht zu. So blieb die folgende Perspektive als einziger Kompromiss übrig.

Making Of

As you can see in the following pictures, the adjustment was a fiddly job that tested my patience. The 180° camera rotation was accompanied by the filter rotation, as the graduated filter was supposed to darken the lower part of the image. In other words, start the camera, expose for 20 seconds, cover the lens, rotate the camera 180°, rotate the filter back 180°, open the lens and expose for another 20 seconds, done.

Die Einstellung war, wie in den folgenden Bildern zu erkennen, eine Fummelei, die mich auf eine Geduldsprobe stellte. Zur Kamerarotation um 180° kam die Filterrotation, da der Verlaufsfilter den jeweils unteren Teil des Bildes abdunkeln sollte. Das heißt, Kamera starten, 20 Sekunden belichten, Objektiv abdecken, Kamera 180° rotieren, Filter 180° zurückdrehen, Objektiv öffnen und weitere 20 Sekunden belichten, fertig.

At first the horizon did not fit. In the following picture, the centre of rotation was not correct. As the petrol station is still fully functional today, cars naturally drove up to refuel, which meant additional waiting time. Added to this was the changing cloud cover, which of course also has to be taken into account with this type of photography. After two hours, a can of guaraná and two pão de queijo, I finally had the final picture in the can.

Zuerst passte der Horizont nicht. Im folgenden Bild stimmte der Drehpunkt nicht. Da die Tankstelle bis heute noch voll funktionsfähig ist, kamen natürlich Autos zum Tanken vorgefahren, was zusätzliche Wartezeit bedeutete. Hinzu kam die wechselnde Bewölkung, die bei dieser Art der Fotografie natürlich auch berücksichtigt werden muss. Nach zwei Stunden, einer Dose Guaraná und zwei Pão de Queijo hatte ich das finale Bild dann endlich im Kasten.

Das Bild unten zeigt mich am Set bei der Arbeit. Geane, meine Frau, hat diesen Augenblick auf einem Foto festgehalten.

Of course, we came across a few petrol stations that still exuded an air of wild romance. Somewhere in the middle of nowhere. On the way from Santa Maria to São Bonifácio.

Natürlich trafen wir auf einige Tankstellen, die noch einen Hauch von wilder Romantik versprühten. Irgendwo im Nirgendwo. Auf dem Weg von Santa Maria nach São Bonifácio.

The picture below shows the SC-435 main road where the petrol station is located. A dusty track that is only asphalted from São Bonifácio onwards. Unfortunately, cameras are installed along with the tarmac. This got me a ticket of €40 for travelling at 80.15 km/h (up to 20% over the speed limit). Unfortunately, the ticket does not mention where the speed limit was. In this case, I prefer the dust tracks. They are free from state arbitrariness and are still a real adventure.

Auf dem Bild unten ist die Bundesstraße SC-435, an der die Tankstelle steht, zu sehen. Eine staubige Piste, die erst ab São Bonifácio asphaltiert ist. Mit dem Asphalt werden leider auch Kameras installiert. Das bescherte mir ein Ticket von 40€ bei 80,15 km/h (bis zu 20% Geschwindigkeitsüberschreitung). Leider wird auf dem Ticket nicht erwähnt, wo die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung lag. In diesem Fall ziehe ich die Staubpisten vor. Die sind frei von staatlicher Willkür und noch echtes Abenteuer. Nächsten Sonntag präsentiere ich eine weitere Story über ein Lightpainting an dieser Stelle, also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
