My Mars Mission

The Location

Sarakiniko Beach is located on the north shore of the Greek island of Milos. It consists mostly of grey-white volcanic rock. The north wind has given the beach its alien shape, so the area is often compared to a lunar landscape. Because of this bizarre landscape, thousands of photos are taken on this beach every day. I also found the landscape overwhelming, only when I saw it I had Mars in mind. And because the island is made of volcanic rock, the image was already planned in my head, a volcano.

The cover picture was the second attempt. I had a more spectacular fire on the first one, but I didn't really like the orange lighting.

Am Nordufer der griechischen Insel Milos ist der Strand Sarakiniko zu finden. Er besteht größtenteils aus grauweißem Vulkangestein. Der Nordwind hat dem Strand seine außerirdische Form verliehen, so dass das Gebiet oft mit einer Mondlandschaft verglichen wird. Wegen dieser bizarren Landschaft werden an diesem Strand täglich tausende Fotos geschossen. Auch ich fand die Landschaft überwältigend, nur hatte ich bei dem Anblick den Mars im Sinn. Und weil die Insel aus Vulkangestein besteht, war das Bild in meinem Kopf auch schon geplant, ein Vulkan. Das Titelbild war der zweite Versuch. Bei dem ersten hatte ich zwar ein spektakuläreres Feuer entfacht, die orangene Lichtsetzung gefiel mir jedoch nicht so recht.

Making of

Actually, I don't like light painting with steel wool. In this case, however, the idea of ​​using steel wool came to mind.

So I went to the supermarket and bought steel wool, a lighter and some wire and assembled the necessary tool. During the performance I wore a bath towel over my head, which also covered my back and arms to protect my skin from the shower of sparks.

The cover image was shot in one exposure with a Canon EOS 6D Mark II and a LAOWA 12mm F2.8 lens (ISO100; f/11; 182s). I lit the scene with a Klarus XT11 GT with attached adapter and orange color filter from Light Painting Paradise and an RGB CRITTER from Ants on a Melon.

Eigentlich mag ich kein Lightpainting mit Stahlwolle. In diesem Fall drängte sich jedoch der Gedanke, Stahlwolle zu verwenden, geradezu auf. Also ging ich den Supermarkt kaufte Stahlwolle, Feuerzeug und ein bisschen Draht für ca. 10 Euro und baute mir das dafür nötige Tool zusammen. Während der Performance trug ich ein Badetuch über den Kopf, welches auch meinen Rücken und die Arme abdeckte, um meine Haut vor dem Funkenregen zu schützen.

Das Titelbild wurde in einer Belichtung mit einer Canon EOS 6D Mark II und einem LAOWA 12mm F2.8 -Objektiv (ISO100; f/11; 182s) aufgenommen. Die Szene wurde von mir mit einer Klarus XT11 GT mit aufgestecktem Adapter und orangenem Farbfilter von Light Painting Paradise und einer RGB CRITTER von Ants on a Melon ausgeleuchtet.

Above is the evening's first attempt at a more spectacular firestorm, but I didn't really like the red lighting. The camera settings were exactly the same as in the cover photo.

Oben seht ihr den ersten Versuch des Abends mit einem spektakuläreren Feuerregen, aber die rote Beleuchtung gefiel mir nicht wirklich. Die Kameraeinstellungen waren exakt die gleichen wie im Titelbild. Im Bild unten seht ihr die Szene bei Tageslicht. Hier könnte eine Mondlandung gefilmt werden. Eine atemberaubende Landschaft.

Super Moon Light

The night before, the following images were taken at Supermond after midnight. The moon was so bright that you had to be careful not to get the shadow cast by the camera in the picture. I repainted the gaps and the hole with a Klarus XT11 GT with attached adapter and orange color filter from Light Painting Paradise. This is how a bizarre Martian landscape was created.

The picture was taken in one exposure. The exposure time was 183s. An ISO value of 200 was set on the Canon EOS 6D Mark II. A LAOWA 12mm F2.8 served as the lens. The aperture was set to f/8.

Am Abend zuvor entstanden die folgenden Bilder bei Supermond nach Mitternacht. Der Mond schien so hell, dass man darauf achten musste den Schattenwurf der Kamera nicht ins Bild zu bekommen. Die Spalten und das Loch malte ich mit einer Klarus XT11 GT mit aufgestecktem Adapter und orangenem Farbfilter von Light Painting Paradise nach. So entstand eine bizarre Marslandschaft.

Aufgenommen wurde das Bild unten in einer Belichtung. Die Belichtungsdauer betrug 183s. An der Canon EOS 6D Mark II war ein ISO-Wert von 200 eingestellt. Als Objektiv diente ein LAOWA 12mm F2.8. Die Blende stand auf f/8.

On the evening of the super moon I already caused the first volcano to erupt, after leaving the last visitors of the beach at 2am.

For this I climbed into the lagoon and threw the burning steel wool over my head. I also traced the crevices here with the flashlight.

Nachdem die letzten Besucher des Strandes morgens um 2:00 Uhr den Strand verlassen hatten, brachte ich schon am Abend des Supermonds den ersten Vulkan zum Ausbruch. Dafür stieg ich in die Lagune und schleuderte die brennende Stahlwolle über meinem Kopf. Die Felsspalten habe ich auch hier mit der Taschenlampe nachgezeichnet.

Above you can see my first light paintings where I used steel wool. Of course I used the location for more light paintings.

I was very fascinated and inspired by this landscape and I think I will come back here sometime.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
