The Different Possibilities Of Star Trails Photography - Part One

As I announced in my last post, today is not about light painting, or is it? At least I'm not actively painting with light, but the Earth's rotation and the stars are doing the work for me. This post and next Sunday's post are about star trails and the options I used to photograph them.

Wie in meinem letzten Post bereits angekündigt, geht es heute mal nicht um ein Lightpainting oder doch? Zumindest male ich nicht aktiv mit Licht, sondern die Erdrotation und die Sterne nehmen mir die Arbeit ab. Es geht in diesem- und dem Post am nächsten Sonntag um Sternspuren und darum, welche Möglichkeiten ich verwendet habe, um sie abzulichten.

This type of photography is actually easy. Set up and start the camera and then wait and enjoy the clear starry sky. If necessary, illuminate the surroundings if the moon is not bright enough.
But first you have to find the right location and, above all, get there with the equipment!
In my case, there is a suitable location about 1.8 km from our house. It is the Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtnishütte, a refuge that is also popularly known as the Schwedenschanze. It was built on the Bußberg in the Teutoburg Forest at an altitude of 306.2m.
A beautiful hike, with over 200 meters of altitude difference to overcome from our location. With 10-15 kg of luggage on your back, you quickly work up a sweat. At the top of the mountain, it is a lot cooler and windier than in the valley. At -5°C, you quickly cool down again. However, the view from up there over the Ravensberger Land compensated for the effort.

Eigentlich ist diese Art der Fotografie einfach. Kamera einstellen und starten und dann warten und den klaren Sternenhimmel genießen. Eventuell noch die Umgebung ausleuchten, wenn der Mond nicht hell genug scheint. Aber zuerst muss man den passenden Standort finden und vor allem mit dem Equipment erreichen! In meinem Fall befindet sich ein geeigneter Ort ca. 1,8km von unserem Haus entfernt. Es handelt sich um die Kaiser-Friedrich-Gedächtnishütte, eine Schutzhütte, die im Volksmund auch Schwedenschanze genannt wird. Sie wurde auf dem Bußberg des Teutoburger Waldes in 306,2 m Höhe errichtet. Eine schöne Wanderung, bei der von unserem Standort über 200 Höhenmeter überwunden werden müssen. Mit 10-15kg Gepäck auf dem Rücken, kommt man schnell ins Schwitzen. Oben auf dem Berg ist es dann um einiges kühler und windiger als im Tal. Bei -5°C ist man dann auch schnell wieder abgekühlt. Die Aussicht von dort oben über das Ravensberger Land entschädigte jedoch für die Mühe.

I had already scouted out the location for the tripod in daylight. I had already ridden my mountain bike up here at lunchtime and planned the picture with the help of the “PhotoPills” and “Viewfinder” apps.
So I set up the tripod at the planned location. I mounted the camera and the lens, including the lens heater, on the tripod. Now all I had to do was connect the interval timer to the camera and connect everything to the power bank. I set the interval release so that the camera exposes for 30 seconds and pauses for 3 seconds to save the file. The focus was set manually.
The camera was set to ISO 400; F4.

Den Standort für das Stativ hatte ich mir bei Tageslicht schon ausgekundschaftet. Zur Mittagszeit war ich bereits mit dem Mountainbike hier hoch gefahren und habe das Bild mit Hilfe der Apps "PhotoPills" und "Viewfinder" geplant. Also baute ich das Stativ am geplanten Standort auf. Montierte die Kamera und das Objektiv inklusive Objektivheizung auf das Stativ. Nun mußte nur noch der Intervallauslöser mit der Kamera verbunden werden und alles mit der Powerbank verbunden werden. Den Intervallauslöser stellte ich so ein, dass die Kamera 30 Sekunden belichtet und 3 Sekunden Pause, zum Abspeicherung der Datei, hat. Die Fokussierung erfolgte manuell. Die Kamera wurde auf ISO 400; F4 eingestellt.

Now it was time to open the first bottle of beer. I sat down at a table behind the house with Geane, who accompanied me there. There we enjoyed the great view of the surrounding towns and the beautiful starry sky. Every now and then, a deer came close to our resting place. It rustled around in the bushes, but luckily the camera left the deer alone.

After about 2 hours, I had collected enough pictures to continue my work at home in the warm office. Before I stopped shooting, I illuminated the building with the Emisar D18. I also used a red and a blue color filter.
Then I packed everything up and we walked home.

Nun konnte die erste Flasche Bier geöffnet werden. Dafür setzte ich mich mit Geane, die mich dorthin begleitete, an einen Tisch hinter dem Haus. Dort genossen wir die tolle Aussicht auf die umliegenden Städte und den schönen Sternenhimmel. Hin und wieder kam ein Reh ganz in die Nähe unseres Rastplatzes. Es raschelte rings um im Gebüsch, aber die Kamera ließ das Wild zum Glück in Ruhe.

Nach ca. 2h hatte ich genügend Bilder gesammelt, um meine Arbeit zu Hause im warmen Büro fortzusetzen. Bevor ich die Aufnahmen stoppte, leuchtete ich mit der Emisar D18 das Gebäude an. Dabei kam auch ein roter und ein blauer Farbfilter zum Einsatz.
Danach packte ich alles zusammen und wir wanderten heimwärts.

Now comes the part of the work that I previously underestimated. First, the vast amounts of data had to be loaded into the PC. As Luminar Neo provides a stacking function (focused stacks), I loaded all the images into this program. Then came the first disillusionment: a maximum of 100 images can be processed. Ok, so I tried it with 100 images. The stacking process worked smoothly. You can see the results above and below. Unfortunately, you can also see the traces of the position lights of many airplanes. Removing these is a lot of work! 😵‍💫 Each of the 100 images with a light trace of an airplane had to be cleaned up manually. That took a lot of time in the end. So astrophotography is no walk in the park either.

Nun folgt der Teil der Arbeit, den ich zuvor unterschätzt habe. Zuerst Müssen die Unmengen an Daten in den PC geladen werden. Da Luminar Neo eine Stacking-Funktion (Fokussierte Stapel) bereitstellt, lud ich alle Bilder in dieses Programm. Dann kam die erste Ernüchterung: Es können höchstens 100 Bilder verarbeitet werden. 😐 Ok, also versuchte ich es mit 100 Bildern. Der Stacking-Vorgang funktionierte reibungslos. Die Ergebnisse siehst du oben und unten. Zu sehen sind leider auch die Spuren der Positionslichter vieler Flugzeuge. Diese zu beseitigen ist richtig viel Arbeit! 😵‍💫 Jedes der 100 Bilder mit einer Lichtspur eines Flugzeuges musste manuell bereinigt werden. Das hat am Ende sehr viel Zeit in Anspruch genommen. Astrofotografie ist also auch kein Ponyhof.

A week earlier I had tried to photograph the Milky Way at this location. That failed despite the start tracker. The light pollution is simply too strong. You can see the result below. I'll show you what other ways I tried to capture the starlight on the camera chip here next week.

Eine Woche zuvor hatte ich versucht die Milchstraße an diesem Ort zu fotografieren. Das schlug trotz Startracker fehl. Die Lichtverschmutzung ist einfach zu stark. Das Ergebnis siehst du unten. Welche weiteren Möglichkeiten ich ausprobiert habe, das Sternenlicht auf den Kamerachip zu bannen, zeige ich in der nächsten Woche an dieser Stelle. Also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
