The Ghost Monastery of Kalamitsia

The Journey

In the middle of nowhere on the Greek Cyclade island of Naxos are the ruins of the abandoned 17th-century Jesuit monastery of KALAMITSIA. To reach it you need a 4x4 vehicle, buggy or quad. With a little off-road experience and courage, it also works with the FIAT Panda, as in my case. The last kilometers there are really an adventure. Which has the advantage that apart from us no other tourists get lost in this place.

Mitten im Nirgendwo auf der griechischen Kykladen-Insel Naxos findet man die Ruinen des verlassenen Jesuitenklosters KALAMITSIA aus dem 17. Jahrhundert. Um es zu erreichen, benötigt man ein Allradfahrzeug, Buggy oder Quad. Mit etwas Geländeerfahrung und Mut klappt es auch mit dem FIAT Panda, wie in meinem Fall. Die letzten Kilometer dorthin sind wirklich ein Abenteuer. Was den Vorteil hat, dass sich ausser uns keine weiteren Touristen an diesen Platz verirren.

The monastery has not been inhabited for 150 years and has since been left to decay. We hope that the remaining walls and ceilings will hold up as long as we lightpaint here.

Das Kloster ist 150 Jahren nicht mehr bewohnt und seitdem dem Verfall preisgegeben. Wir hoffen, dass die verbliebenen Wände und Decken noch halten, solange wir hier Lightpainten.

The Location

In the pictures above you can see the main building. There are also stables and a pigeon house here. All wooden structures no longer exist. You can still walk on the stone stairs and ceilings (at your own risk). The main hall has a white marble floor. A fireplace room is still clearly visible. There is a spring in the basement, pictured below, that flows through the house into the garden. Everything looks very idyllic.

In den Bildern oben seht ihr das Hauptgebäude. Es existieren hier ausserdem noch Ställe und ein Taubenhaus. Alle Holzkonstruktionen existieren nicht mehr. Die Treppen und Decken aus Stein kann man noch (auf eigene Gefahr) betreten. Die Haupthalle ist mit einem Boden aus weißem Marmor ausgestattet. Ein Kaminzimmer ist noch gut zu erkennen. Im Keller, Bild unten, entspringt eine Quelle, die durch das Haus in den Garten ließt. Alles wirkt sehr idyllisch.

Light Painting

The basement seemed the right place for the light painting, simply because it was already dark there and we didn't want to start the adventurous trip back by car on this track in the dark. Actually, the great hall upstairs is the first choice. Maybe next time. I already had the idea: 😁 The spirit of the monastery finds no rest and returns to the monastery every night. 👻 (See image below)

Für das Lightpainting erschien uns der Keller als der geeignete Raum, schlicht, weil es dort schon dunkel war und wir die abenteuerliche Fahrt zurück mit dem Auto auf dieser Piste nicht im Dunkeln antreten wollten. Eigentlich ist die große Halle oben die erste Wahl. Vielleicht beim nächsten mal. Die Bildidee hatte ich schon: 😁 Der Geist des Klosters findet keine Ruhe und kehrt jede Nacht zurück ins Kloster. 👻 (Siehe Bild unten)

Making of

Of course, the idea gradually developed during light painting. That's how the hint with the cross came from Geane. How are you supposed to know that you are here in the monastery 🤔. So I painted a "graffiti" cross on the wall using the RGB CRITTER from Ants on a Melon. I traced the ghost with a blue water bottle on a LIGHTPAINTER RYU'S LIGHTWORKS flashlight, see below. I illuminated the room with an LEDLenser P7R Signature with adapter and color filter from Light Painting Paradise.

Die Idee hat sich natürlich allmählich beim Lightpainten entwickelt. So kam der Hinweis mit dem Kreuz von Geane. Woher soll man auch wissen, dass man sich hier im Kloster befindet🤔. Also malte ich mit der RGB CRITTER von Ants on a Melon ein "Graffiti" -Kreuz an die Wand. Die Spur des Geistes habe ich mit einer blauen Wasserflasche an einer LIGHTPAINTER RYU´S LIGHTWORKS -Taschenlampe, siehe unten, gezogen. Den Raum leuchtete ich mit einer LEDLenser P7R Signature mit Adapter und Farbfilter von Light Painting Paradise aus.

Tool

As so often, I didn't take a large selection of tools with me on the trip. So I had to build the right tool myself. The following pictures describe the simple structure. I use my pocket knife and cut off the neck of the bottle. Then I heated the opening of the bottle with the hotel hair dryer and pressed the flashlight into the opening. After everything had cooled down, the lamp held securely in the bottle.

Wie so oft, habe ich keine große Auswahl an Tools mit auf die Reise genommen. Also musste ich mir das passende Werkzeug selbst bauen. Die folgenden Bilder beschreiben den einfachen Aufbau. Ich benutze mein Taschenmesser und schnitt den Flaschenhals ab. Dann erwärmte ich die Öffnung der Flasche mit dem Hotelföhn und presste die Taschenlampe in die Öffnung. Nachdem alles abgekühlt war hielt die Lampe in der Flasche bombenfest.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
