The last few weeks have been so eventful for me that I haven't managed an HIVE post for two weekends. I'm preparing to move the center of my life from Germany to Brazil. This is taking up a lot of my time. Sorry! Last week I finally received the flashlight from Ants On A Melon that I ordered back in April. I would like to introduce this lamp to you today.

Die letzten Wochen waren für mich so ereignisreich, dass ich zwei Wochenenden keinen HIVE -Post zustande gebracht habe. Ich bereite mich darauf vor, meinen Lebensmittelpunkt von Deutschland nach Brasilien zu verlegen. Das nimmt einiges an Zeit in Anspruch. Sorry! In der letzten Woche traf endlich die, bereits im April bestellte, Taschenlampe von Ants On A Melon bei mir ein. Diese Lampe möchte ich euch heute vorstellen.

I ordered the lamp on 26.04.2024 for 120,76€. Plus shipping (First Class Package International) €35.95 and €28.83 customs, that makes a total of €185.54. The lamp is therefore no bargain!
As with the update story of the first ant lamp, Ands On A Melon made itself unpopular with me with an e-mail. They offered to update the shipping method because the one I had chosen didn't ensure that I would receive the lamp. The guys wanted to charge me extra for this update. What a cheek! Especially as, as far as I know, no other shipping option was offered at the time of purchase. You can't expect good service from this company, that's for sure!
The package did not arrive intact. One edge of the packaging was already bruised. However, the contents were fine.

Bestellt hatte ich die Lampe am 26.04.2024 für 120,76€. Plus Shipping (First Class Package International) 35,95€ und 28,83€ Zoll macht das insgesamt 185,54€. Die Lampe ist somit kein Schnäppchen!
Wie auch schon bei der Update-Story der ersten Ameisenlampe, machte sich Ands On A Melon mit einer E-Mail bei mir unbeliebt. In der wurde ein Update des Versands angeboten, weil der von mir gewählte nicht sicher stellt, dass die Wahre auch bei mir ankommt. Für dieses Update wollten die Jungs noch einmal extra kassieren. Eine Frechheit! Zumal beim Kauf meines Wissens, keine andere Versandoption angeboten wurde. Guten Service kann man von dieser Firma nicht erwarten, soviel steht fest!
Das Paket kam nicht ganz unversehrt bei mir an. Die Verpackung enthielt an einer Kante bereits Druckstellen. Der Inhalt war jedoch in Ordnung.

The latest model, the RGB CRITTER BT, can only be operated together with a smartphone paired via Bluetooth. This has the advantage that operation is very simple and intuitive. Unfortunately, the geniuses at Ants On A Melon have not managed to save a mode once it has been set in the flashlight, so you always have to have your smartphone switched on to operate the flashlight.

Das neueste Modell, die RGB CRITTER BT, kann nur zusammen mit einem, über Bluetooth gekoppelten, Smartphone betrieben werden. Das hat den Vorteil, dass die Bedienung sehr einfach und intuitiv ist. Leider haben die Genies von Ants On A Melon es nicht geschafft, einen einmal eingestellten Mode in der Taschenlampe abzuspeichern, so dass man das Smartphone immer eingeschaltet mit sich führen muss, um die Taschenlampe zu betreiben.

The design of the lamp is solid and clean. A powerful RGB LED is housed in a hollow housing with an attached lens. The whole thing is mounted together with the electronics in an aluminum tube. There are threads on each side of the tube to which adapters can be attached. This time the rubber cover sits firmly on the tube and the buttons can be operated without any problems. What I don't understand is the instruction that the battery should only be charged in the flashlight using the charging cable supplied. This is because the battery is easy to remove. A tool is supplied to remove it. A sensible end cap is also included this time.

Der Aufbau der Lampe ist solide und sauber. Eine starke RGB-LED steckt in einem Hohlspiel mit aufgesteckter Linse. Das ganze wird zusammen mit der Elektronik in einem Aluminiumrohr montiert. An jeder Seite des Rohrs befinden sich Gewinde an denen Adapter angebracht werden können. Die Gummihülle sitzt diesmal fest auf dem Rohr und die Taster lassen sich problemlos bedienen. Was sich mir nicht erschließt, ist der Hinweis, dass man den Akku ausschließlich mit dem Mitgelieferten Ladekabel in der Taschenlampe laden soll. Denn der Akku ist leicht zu entnehmen. Zur Entnahme wird ein Werkzeug mitgeliefert. Eine vernünftige Endkappe befindet sich diesmal ebenfalls im Lieferumfang.

To operate the flashlight, it is necessary to download an app to the smartphone. Connecting the lamp to my smartphone worked without any problems. With the app, it is possible to operate up to 10 ant lamps within a radius of up to 20 m at the same time. Operating the app is intuitive. Various pre-programmed modes are available. Once you have selected a mode, you can choose from preconfigured settings.

Um die Taschenlampe zu betreiben, ist es notwendig eine App auf das Smartphone zu laden. Die Verbindung der Lampe mit meinem Smartphone funktionierte problemlos. Mit der App ist es möglich, bis zu 10 Ameisenlampen in einem Umkreis bis zu 20m gleichzeitig zu bedienen. Die Bedienung der App ist intuitiv. Es stehen verschiedene vorprogrammierte Modi zur Verfügung. Hat man einen Modus ausgewählt, kann man unter vorkonfigurierten Einstellungen wählen.

However, the “Custom Mode” is particularly interesting. There are no limits to your imagination here. You can choose from 16,777,216 different colors that can be combined. In addition, the whole thing can be operated in different modes. The speed of the strobe can be adjusted from 0 -100%. Once you have found the perfect setting for you, you can save it in the app under a self-named category and always have it ready to call up.

Besonders interessant ist aber der "Custom Mode". Hier sind der Phantasie keine Grenzen gesetzt. Man wählt hier unter 16.777.216 verschiedenen Farben, die Kombiniert werden können. Zusätzlich kann das ganze in verschieden Modi betrieben werden. Die Geschwindigkeit des Strobe ist von 0 -100% einstellbar. Hat man die für sich perfekte Einstellung gefunden, speichert man diese in der App unter einer selbst benannten Kategorie ab und hat sie stets abrufbereit.

The lamp can be switched on or off from a smartphone or on the flashlight itself. The control can be adapted to personal requirements under the “Universal Settings” menu item. The button LEDs can be deactivated here. Also included is a “Momentary Press” function. The programmers have again left one fly in the ointment here: The “Universal Settings” are not saved! These must always be checked after pairing with the flashlight before use!

Die Lampe kann sowohl vom Smartphone oder an der Taschenlampe selbst Ein- oder Ausgeschaltet werden. Die Steuerung kann unter dem Menüpunkt "Universal Settings" an die persönlichen Bedürfnisse angepasst werden. Die Button LEDs können hier deaktiviert werden. Auch mit dabei, eine "Momentary Press" -Funktion. Einen Wermutstropfen haben die Programmierer diesmal wieder hier hinterlassen: Die "Universal Settings" werden nicht gespeichert! Diese müssen nach dem Koppeln mit der Taschenlampe vor dem Einsatz immer überprüft werden!

Conclusion

The AOAM RGB Critter BT has improved a lot compared to its predecessor models, but is still a long way from being a perfect flashlight for light painters. I find the colors and light intensity convincing. The cover picture and the picture below show the first results of a practical use of the new lamp. Next Sunday I will go into more detail about the development of these tests and provide further examples of pictures taken with the flashlight. So stay tuned!

Die AOAM RGB Critter BT hat sich gegenüber ihren Vorgängermodellen ein gutes Stück verbessert, ist aber von einer perfekten Taschenlampe für Lightpainter noch ein Stück weit entfernt. Die Farben und Lichtstärke finde ich überzeugend. Das Titelbild und das Bild unten zeigen die ersten Ergebnisse eines praktischen Einsatzes der neuen Lampe. Am nächsten Sonntag werde ich nähr auf die Entstehung dieser Tests eingehen und weitere Bildbeispiele mit der Taschenlampe liefern. Also bleibt dran!

What Is Light Painting?

Light painting is a unique art form. As a rule, the darkness is illuminated by the artist with various light sources and traces of light are painted into the picture with various lighting tools. Various techniques are used, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. When using ND filters, this technique can also be used in daylight. All images were taken during a single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cropping and possibly adjusting the white balance, the images are not processed on the computer.

Lichtmalerei ist eine einzigartige Kunstform. In der Regel wird die Dunkelheit mit diversen Lichtquellen vom Künstler ausgeleuchtet und Lichtspuren mit diversen Lichtwerkzeugen ins Bild gemalt. Dabei kommen verschiedene Techniken zum Einsatz, wie Kamerarotation oder andere Bewegungen der Kamera während der Belichtung. Die kreativen Möglichkeiten sind nahezu unbegrenzt. Bei Einsatz von ND-Filtern kann diese Technik auch bei Tageslicht angewand werden. Alle Bilder wurden während einer einzigen Belichtung aufgenommen. Abgesehen vom Entrauschen, Schärfen, Beschneiden und eventuellem Anpassen des Weißabgleichs werden die Bilder nicht am Computer bearbeitet.
