I've wanted a longer telephoto lens for AGES. Not just for photographing wildlife, but also because I thought it might open up some more creative options for me. Anyway, I had a go with a friends Nikon 80-400mm f4.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR a couple of weekends ago in the park, and that galvanised my thoughts on the matter. It's a reasonably expensive lens, but I decided to try and find a second hand one in good condition. After a disappointing online purchase that was advertised 'as new' but had a broken lens cap and dust in the optics (it was returned immediately!), I located exactly what I wanted at a shop called Aperture, located just north of Oxford Circus. It's the first time I've been there, but it's a lovely shop, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. The lens that I went to see was immaculate, so I bought it!

On Saturday morning, I headed up to the park with my camera. I took a quick shot with one of my old lenses, of the waning crescent moon setting over the ponds. There was a little pre-dawn mist, but the lack of cloud made sunrise really harsh, and the mist burned off very quickly.
Moonset
Sunrise was disappointing, but I didn't care because I had my NEW LENS to play with. All I had to do was find something to photograph.....
It had been a cold frosty night, and these stags looked like they were enjoying the first rays of sunshine.
The stag on the right has already lost his antlers. Soon all the deer will shed their antlers, and re-grow them over the summer months....
The lens is fantastic. Auto focus is fast, and the image detail is great.

The fighting at this time of the year is quite playful. During the Autumn rut, it is a more hostile and violent spectacle.
I am so happy to finally have a long telephoto lens. It's going to offer lots more opportunities to go out and shoot, when the light is not great for landscape work.

LOVE the photographs. Really looking forward to seeing your creativity and use of the lens. Think outside the box and have fun experimenting. Cheers!

so, where are the new photo-walks, concerning you are a happy owner of 400mm now?..
ps.
a bit sad news -- @cccf have finished its activity, if you delegated any CCC to it, please undelegate... as for all the other news, the word 'sad' is not appropriate here.. 😶
Hi @qwerrie! Nice to hear from you. I had a bit of a creative slump, Feb was a wash out for decent photography weather, then I went away for a week.
Yesterday, I had a lovely photo walk and I will definitely post the pics on here in the next day or so.
That is a shame about the @cccf.
Things are definitely 'sad' at the moment. 😶
vice versa, weather is the only good thing we have here recently, 9/10 days are sunny, and snow/ice are melting.
my today's capture (focus stake of 2 frames), havent posted it yet..
will look forward to your posts. as for cccf its not a shame... actually I can give more details if you be intrested to know. its a give-and-take process, always, and one cant only give, give and give all the time, getting nothing back... 🙄 thats what happened, sort of.
I forgot to treat you with !PIZZA 🤩
I am interested to hear how the cccf worked. I'm still getting my head around blockchains, and some of it is still a mystery to me. :)
Nice to see the snowdrops poking through the earth. It's starting to look like spring here too. Blossom on some of the trees. Bluebells will be next!
Have some !PIZZA

Thank you @fotostef! I am so happy that I bought this lens. It's so nice to use. Will have to try and get out again this week one morning before work, weather permitting! :)
Congratulations on the new lens! I envy your extra 100mms. Mine only goes to 300mm. Makes such a difference when photographing wildlife.
Beautiful deer photos. That first one is also amazing.
Thank you @corvidae! My other telephoto lens only went to 210mm, so 400mm is a massive leap. I love how much reach I now have. Can't wait to get out again with my camera...
Glad that you like the photographs. :)
Nice work with this lense!
@tipu curate
Thank you so much @marc-allaria! It's such a nice lens, and I know I'm going to be using it lots from now on. :)
That is a really nice lens, I'm sure it makes a big difference in the types of things you can do I know mine helped. Great photos of the deer, looks like they would have been very interesting to watch.
Thank you @mmckinneyphoto13! It is a lovely lens. Hopefully it will give me more creative options when I'm out shooting. The deer were fun to watch, and I could tell they were really enjoying the sunshine.
Sounds like an awesome lens! Love the last deer image! I used to have a Tamron 150-600, but sold it when I went mirrorless, I’ll have to look at getting a telephoto again!
Thanks Ben! Yes, I'm really impressed with it so far and I'm genuinely really excited to go out and use it again. Haven't felt like that about a bit of new kit for ages.
I think the mirrorless quandary is the reason I didn't buy a telephoto lens sooner. But I figured that realistically, I'm not going to update my DSLR to a mirrorless system for a while (unless I win the lottery!) and so I should just crack on and get the lens I want. And, if I eventually update to a Nikon Z camera, I can always use their adaptor for my current glass. My D750 is in great condition, and should keep me going for a good few years yet. 🙂🤞
Nice shots!
Thank you @triplug !! :)
Wow nice
Glad that you like the photos! :)
This is a mammoth shot! congrats on the capture!
Thank you @tarazkp! Really glad that you like the photograph. The deer were very obliging and posed very nicely for me. :)
Great!
Thank you very much! :)
I envy the lens ;)
I could almost feel your excitement with the new lens. The results are fantastic. Now I want one.
It was an exciting purchase for me. Now that I have the lens, I know it was the right decision. Really glad that you like the photographs that I took. :)
