First Shared Photos

Very Short History

I've been taking photos for a few years, but haven't shared many of them. Mostly, I'm experimenting, to learn, or to document over time something I find interesting. But I've never shared them with anyone.

I took some photos on 9-10 May 2020, because I couldn't resist. On 10 May, I saw a Twitter post from Derick Rethans, someone many of us in the PHP programming community know and appreciate.

The image it shows pushed me over the edge to begin sharing some of my own photos.

I took more pictures mid-month, and have just now figured out how to edit them a bit, and share them here.

Here They Are

I know little about photography, and even less about editing. But here are the first ones.

Day and Night

This is a group I'm calling Day and Night.

I'm taken with sunlight passing through leaves; I love the interplay of light and dark:

I went upstairs to write or to work; I don't remember. It was a few minutes before midnight, and the moon was out. What else could I do?

One of my first attempts at capturing a sense of what I feel when seeing light and leaves from this perspective:

A Few Flowers

This one is called, not surprisingly, Peony. This image is from 15 May:

Here we have an Opening, something we all need to be doing more now, I think:

A Shelf of Blossoms, almost:

I like the blossoms themselves here, in Blackberry Blossoms, but also the light and shadow on the leaves:

Life is replete with Wabi-sabi; embrace it!

I'll end with Mainsail and Little Jib. You may already know this is a Spathiphyllum, or Peace Lily:

Administrivia

  • Camera: Nikon D3400
  • Lens: AF-P Nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6 G
  • Format: RAW (NEF)
  • Software: darktable 2.6.0, mostly to flatten out light/dark histogram a bit (that's all I know how to do!)
  • Software: Gimp 2.10.8, for cropping, scaling, etc.
  • Laptop: Purism Librem 15 running PureOS
  • I shoot mostly using aperture priority, to learn about and play with depth of field
  • So noob. Taking pictures: much like, so amaze.
  • I have pics of the comet (poor images), and the eclipse from August 2017 (pre-camera, from phone!)

Final Thought, and Thanks

I suppose I kind of know where I want to go with an image, but I don't know how to get there yet.

You didn't know it, derickr and elizabethn (both on Twitter), but you inspired me to start sharing some photos!
