Seeing as I had a free day before I go back to work tomorrow, I thought, while I can, have a trip to Cleethorpes.
Cleethorpes is a coastal town on the mouth of the Humber Estuary, you can see the other side (Spurn Point) most days (unless it's raining!).
It's been a rather hot day, and I now have sun burn, as couldn't find my hat, and I'd forgot to put sun block on (duh!!).
Anyhow, the reason I went is I wanted to photograph this fort that sits just off the coast, I have seen and admired this for years and always wanted to know what it looked like close up.
There are 2 forts in the estuary, the fort nearest to Cleethorpes is (as I believe) called "Haile Sands Fort",
The two forts (the other being called Bull Fort (which is slightly larger)), was built during the first world war to prevent attack from Germany.
It is said that the project to build these forts took 40,000 tons of steel and concrete to build, and that was for each fort.
I'd always wondered what this fort looked like close up, and now I know, I have seen other pictures on the internet, but there's nothing like taking your own.
I can only imagine how hot it gets inside one of these things in the summer, and to think these garrisons were to hold around 200 men with arms.
Even though you aren't far from the coast, I like the above shot, as home is just a spec in the ocean, you really do get to see the vastness of the sea with this one.
A little look down on the beach as I was bringing the drone back in. Had a fantastic fly out today, and now I can really cross this off my bucket list.
All pictures were shot using my DJI Mini 2 (called Josephine the flying machine), processed in lightroom and Luminar Flex.
I really hope you've enjoyed this shot of such a unique building.
All the best :-)
Very Beautiful view
Thank you, it was great to fly the drone out to them, I’m kind of addicted to flying over water lol
Those are awesome🙌 Do they allow people to explore the fort?
Thank you ever so much, there are YouTube videos of people going onto them, although they are now privately owned, so I doubt the owners will encourage it.
It can't hurt for you to ask :) ... They might say yes 🙌
!PIZZA !ALIVE
That would make the ultimate apocalyptic zumbi shelter hahaha
interesting that they kept the structures after the war 100 years ago!
I’m not sure if they are listed buildings now, it’s a shame to see them rotting away under the current ownership, but they are certainly a part of history.
