Fiber And Textile Art

in Photography Lovers2 years ago

Yesterday I visited another exhibition. It was a total surprise as I had no idea what the exhibition was about, but when I had a look inside, through the glass door, knew right away that I'm going to see some very cool stuff and that's exactly what happened.

The exhibition is not new, it is organized every year it seems, this year was the 27th edition. According to the lady at the Art Nouveau gallery (a very nice lady by the way), the number of artists participating is growing every year, which is a very good sign that this kind of art is not lost.

It was a fiber and textile art exhibition of Romanian artists from all over the country. A big one I might add as there were around 82 artists participating with 120 works to see. Most of the artists were women, there were only 3 male exhibitors, but who knows, maybe in time the ratio can change.

I know very little about fiber art, but I'm learning as this is not the first fiber art exhibition I visited and love it. Fiber art is very different from any other art type and it seems very attractive to me.

Fiber art (fibre art in British spelling) refers to fine art whose material consists of natural or synthetic fiber and other components, such as fabric or yarn. It focuses on the materials and on the manual labor on the part of the artist as part of the works' significance, and prioritizes aesthetic value over utility. source

Fiber art is a fascinating one, you just have to run a search and have a look at the images Google serves you, to know how many types there are in the world.

This was the first artwork in the gallery and seemed a bit strange to be honest. I had to go close to see what it is made of. I'm still not sure, but I think it's printed on canvas. It's a mirror image, or two halves of the same image, mirror view.

Gate To The Soul

This technique is not unknown to me, have seen similar before, just can't remember if it was the same artist or not. It's definitely an interesting one.

Transfiguration

This was something new as I've never seen anything similar, but I loved how the artwork had 3 different parts/color combinations and from far, it looked like cracked paint.

Burning Helplessness

I think this was felt.

Between Dots

I must admit, I had a few goals for yesterday. Besides taking photos of the artworks, learning about fiber art and enjoying myself, I also had as task, taking straight photos. Meaning paying more attention to how I take those photos. I knew I come home and will check the grid to see how I did. I'm always trying my best, but the results are not always what I want. This time it was different as apart for the light, I did not have to adjust much on the photos. Light is a different discussion as I never use flesh at any of the exhibition, so I work with what the gallery is providing and their primary goal is not to make photographing easier, unfortunately.

Most likely you can guess the title of this one on your own.

Silent Lucidity

This was a very cool and unique one. I liked it a lot. Unfortunately it was placed in the corner, under other works and the light was coming from behind.

20230411_124240a.jpg

I tried to avoid capturing my own shadow, which I did successfully, but the angle is not the best. Another thing that I do before posting the photos is clean the wall and the background. This may look strange, but unfortunately, when you take closer photos, you can see dirt spots or damage done on the wall. I'm always trying to correct those if I can so the eye can focus on the artwork, not the black spots on the wall.

White Mystery

Another wonderful piece. I would love to know how it was done though as at this point it is a mystery to me :)

Thinking Of You

At this point I tried to do an exercise for myself. I looked at the title of the artwork and tried to imagine how would I illustrate Thinking Of You? The answer is ... I have no idea. So I looked at the wall mat and tried to figure out what it means. All I could see was confused, twisted thoughts and most likely that's how the human mind works. It's a good illustration though.

This exhibition motivated me a lot. I love fiber and fabrics and the more I see, the more I feel like I should try to create something of my own. Sewing, crocheting and kitting is not unknown to me, the rest I can learn for sure. I have some fabrics left since the lockdown, when I started to learn sewing and made some bags, so time is the only one I need :)

Ok, so this is it for today. Let me know if you were able to find something interesting in this post.

The artwork really amazed me. I loved all the details about them and they really catches my interest. It's been so long since I never experience this kind of exhibit again, so thank you for sharing. 😊

My pleasure and I'm glad you liked it. I hope you can see one live, soon :)

Que exhibición más bonita e interesante, me encantaron mucho las fotografías, excelente trabajo 👍📸

Thank you for the nice words.

Absolutely love this post! Art, textiles and sculptures are passions of mine. Can I ask, are you Romanian? My new neighbours are Romanian and have invited me to go round on Sunday for their Easter celebration and I am so excited! I don’t really know the culture, but I researched a little and I have bought a Romanian red wine to give as a gift. Is this appropriate?
Love this post, thank you for sharing! 😃

I'm glad to hear that as it means my effort was not in vain.
I'm not Romanian, my mother tongue is Hungarian, but I live in Romania. It's a bit complicated, but if you look up the history of Transylvania you understand more :)

Yes, gifting vine is appropriate and it was very kind of them to invite you for Raster celebration. Would you like me to prepare you a little bit? 😂

Yes please! 😂 I am so grateful that they have invited me. I live in rural England, in Nottinghamshire and my neighbours are also new to the area. I was speaking lady and she was saying she is missing London, where she moved from, as she has no friends here and feels very lonely. So I wanted to make her feel happy and appreciated here, but I also don’t want to offend by making the wrong gestures lol 😂 Any advice and preparations would be most welcome! 🥰

You can't offend them, no worries. Not knowing the culture and the customs does not mean you are offending them.

So I'm going to tell you what the traditional Easter in Romania means. But this doesn't mean you have to do the same.

When you go in, you can say Hristos a Înviat, which is what they say during Easter and it means Christ has risen. Here's the pronunciation if you'd like to learn it. They will reply Adevărat a înviat, which means He is truly risen. But don't stress yourself over it, if you can't learn the pronunciation, a simple Happy Easter will be just fine.

They will most likely serve you cabbage rolls, which is the traditional Easter dish. Another dish that most likely will be on the table is Cozonac. They will most likely have Easter eggs, which are fried and colored eggs. There's a Romanian tradition that may surprise you :) They have the habit of the clashing two eggs. I mean you hold one, the other person holds the other and you clash the two eggs.

At Easter, Romanians have the custom of colliding eggs. The egg is generally associated with creation, and the Easter egg symbolizes Jesus in the tomb. The shell of the egg is the stone of the tomb from which Jesus emerged resurrected, and the clash of the eggs signifies the opening of the Holy Sepulcher and the Resurrection. source

This is what I can tell you, but this is all probability (like in trading 😂). I don't know if they will keep the tradition, or they will go for something simple, not specific to their tradition. One thing is certain, don't stress yourself as they will not expect you to know these things or do the things they do. Just say Happy Easter and everything will be fine :)

Thank you so much! I will definitely try to learn the pronunciation as I love languages and I would like to make them smile! 😃 I had been reading about the eggs and was surprised but I think it must be a really fun activity for the children to do as well as adults. I am really excited to go on Sunday and feel privileged to be a part of it 🥰

I forgot to tell you about lamb. Lamb is traditional Easter dish too, but not everyone likes it. I hope you do as it's delicious.

You can have this dish, which is made of the internal organs of lamb and eggs.

Lamb roast, which is heavenly good. The previous dish too by the way.

Now I'm not saying they are going to serve all this, but these are the dishes that could land on the table. 😃

Lamb is my favourite! 😍 I’m even more excited now haha

My pleasure and I'm glad I can help. I'm also excited to see how that lunch is going to go. I think it'll be a lot of fun, so no worries. In any case, I'll be here if you have any questions and I'm expecting a feedback 😂.

Have fun 😘

Wow! Just reading the history between Hungarians and Romanians, it is indeed complicated!

It is a bit but don't stress yourself with it :)

That's a cool exhibition. And you're a very dedicated photographer when you're cleaning the walls IRL!

I also discovered textile art more or less by accident. In Barcelona I came across an exhibition by Teresa Lanceta, who's inspired by Berber carpet weaving. I like the interaction between traditional patterns and abstract art.
Barcelona-Plaça Reial, 13 (1984, wool and cotton)

And you're a very dedicated photographer when you're cleaning the walls IRL!

Noooo, I'm cleaning the wall digitally 😂. I would get arrested if I start cleaning the wall at an exhibition. But I can edit the photo, remove what is not wanted and leave the artworks untouched.

Thanks for the photo, that is a wonderful piece.

I like the interaction between traditional patterns and abstract art.

I like it too and in my upcoming posts, there will be examples for that.

I really liked Thinking of You. I think that's the thing that caught my attention the most in the exhibition. And then there's this cube. That looks great too. It's really hard to decide between them. It's a good hobby. You're making something and having fun at the same time.

That is a good choice, I like that too. The cube was also awesome. There were so many cool once this time.

I really love the gate to the soul.

It is definitely an interesting one, requires a lot of work too.

Would take me for ages and even then people wouldn't have a clue what I did make. But that's art also!

Lol, tell me about it. I visit a lot of exhibitions and always trying to figure out what the artist meant. Do I succeed? Only God knows 😂

This is amazing! I just recently discovered such a type of art as three-dimensional textural paintings and I was struck by this ability to convey art not only to those people, who can see with their own eyes, but also to those people, who either have poor eyesight or do not see at all.
This is the kind of art that involves us not only with paint and the image that is transmitted on paper, but also involves us with volume, three-dimensional form and the texture of the very surface of the work of art.
I hope that in this museum at least some of the exhibits could be touched in order to feel what the author wanted to convey in its entirety.
Thank you for sharing! It impressed me even through the photos.

I hope that in this museum at least some of the exhibits could be touched in order to feel what the author wanted to convey in its entirety.

There was no sign anywhere with what you can or can not do, but I would never tough any of the artworks. Fiber and textile can be delicate, so I suppose you were not allowed to do that, but I understand what you mean. For some it can mean a lot.

I'm glad you liked it and stay tuned as there's more to come. There were so many cool works there.

Nice artworks. I've never seen such an exhibition before.🤩

Then it was time for you to see one :)

really amazing. I love to see such good art.

I'm glad to hear that.

😁👍👍 hopefully always fun.

The artworks are very beautiful
I really like them
Nice one!

I'm glad to know you like them.

Wow… muy buenas obras !!

I agree with you on that.

Sewing, crocheting and kitting is not unknown to me, the rest I can learn for sure. I have some fabrics left since the lockdown, when I started to learn sewing and made some bags, so time is the only one I need :)

My mother was much into sewing, crocheting, and kitting. I remember so many decorative blankets and quilts over my childhood. I'd love to see your work:)

Ālea Iacta Est ("The die is cast")

This one is my favorite one you show cased. At first it reminded me of the cube in the movie Transformers. I like the size and the abundance of art (6 sides). It's fun seeing different art, here throughout the city we have some artists that use metal in thier art.

Then you know what needlework means.
Here are some of my works, since you mentioned you'd like to see them :)

During the covid lockdown, when people were dying of boredom, I had the most busy period of the year, as I decided to learn sewing from YouTube videos and that's when I started making bags and selling them on etsy 😁. Yeah, crazy woman, I know.

That dice seems to be a well liked one and I agree, it was quite amazing.

Thanks Erikah I'll check them out when I get some free time
