My Photographic Year in 12 Days - February 2022

in Photography Lovers2 years ago (edited)

Continuing my "best of 2022" this is February 2022's images. I don't believe I was as busy photographically this month due to work being quite heavy going at the time.

I believe that photography can help relieve the stresses of everyday life and during the month of February I was in the middle of getting ready to leave my employer. After COVID, I found myself working three sales territories covering most of the UK and other staff members were being laid off and not replaced. I decided to leave for a less stressful job; over work is not good for one's health and getting out to shoot something definitely helped!

The Case of the Mysterious White Dot

This is a camera rotation image I rejected and never posted anywhere on the interweb because I deemed it to be a fail. I couldn't get my head around what the white dot was appearing in the image. It wasn't the moon, there was no stray lights coming from anywhere that I recall and I still can't work out where it came from!

Wavy Light Stuff

In lightpainting circles there are several genres within the art form. My preferred style is more of a kinetic or rotation style of lightpainting. The most common form is the wavy light stuff and I profess to be not that great at this style. But sometimes it's good to practice outside of the box and push yourself.

This was a simple to make silhouette with me waving a lightblade around walking towards camera left and right. It's not going to win any awards for lightpainting but it's a good exercise to see if an idea sparks!

Another larger than life white dot

I was tipped off about an event taking place in Lincoln Cathedral where a giant model of the moon was suspended from the ceiling. As I recall the model moon was around 20 feet (6m) in diameter and attracted large crowds to view it. We got in early as the doors opened and I managed to bag quite a few shots before the throng turned up!

Shooting the shooter

During our mooch around Lincoln Cathedral, I spotted this potential composition with @neilru75 crouching to take a photo with people walking on by. I focussed on Neil and used a wider aperture for the shallow depth of field with a slower than is good for me shutter speed to blur the passers by. Seems to have worked because Neil liked the shot and wanted it for his FB profile pic...

Stitching a Cathedral together

I'd seen a photographer use a technique whereby he would stitch several rows and columns of photos together in Photoshop. I made this with about 2 rows of 6 or 7 images as I remember. One of the things I realised in shooting this set of images was that being in the absolute dead centre was quite important and here I missed it!

Lincoln Cathedral

This cathedral was once the tallest building in Europe, if not the world. One of these days I will take the tour up in to the roof spaces and take photos but my knees would hurt and the medieval passageways may not be big enough for my enormous bulk!

Chee Tor Tunnel Lightpainting

An all too rare collaboration with @fadetoblack before his knees decided to give him the runaround. I was still obsessed with this kinetic movement of the camera and here I experimented with alternative colours than I usually use. Still not convinced the colour combination works!

Vertical Camera Pan

In Sheffield is a high vantage point overlooking the city centre. The vantage point is high in more ways than one with people rolling up in their cars and getting high on cannabis or other such substances. This image is likely what the occupants in the cars were seeing as they travelled to outer space!

Horizontal Camera Pan

Similar to the above vertical camera pan, I tried a horizontal one also. I think I prefer this way around and it's a reminder to myself to do more of this....

Rotating a Windmill

I arrived at North Leverton Windmill with a new part for my camera rotation tool. I had bought an extra long nodal rail to create a more rigid and stable platform on which to rotate my camera around the lens axis. It seems to have worked because the alignment was very pleasing to my pseudo OCD!

The Nodal Rail

This is a triptic of the modified camera rotation gadget with the new nodal rail. Surprisingly way more stable!

Rotating Windmill Obsession

I spent quite a long time stood in the dark shooting this windmill. When I nail a shot I try to improve the first ones but the accuracy was already spot on!

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.
