Shooting models with a fractal filter

in Photography Lovers3 years ago (edited)

Two things coincided to make these images. First I was browsing for a lens filter on Amazon when up popped a 72mm fractal filter for a very reasonable £20 and I thought it was worth a punt. If the filter turned out to be garbage then at least I could return it. And second I was booked to go on a photoshoot at a nearby studio which has a large pool designed specifically for photography!

The water tank is approx. 3 mtrs long x 2 mtrs high and 2 mtrs in breadth. By my quick ready reckoning the tank contains 12,000 litres of water. The tank can be found at http://www.tankspace.co.uk/

So I turned up armed with my fractal filter aka "new toy" and grabbed these:

Lucille

With the fractal filter, the centre of the frame renders a "normal" looking image with the crazy effects surrounding the middle. Here I've cropped Lucille on the thirds so as to make her the point of focus in the frame.

Ksenia Archer

I don't know much about this model but Ksenia here was stood under the studio's rainfall set. I got so many "normal" images, I whipped out the filter and took a few shots:

Kai plays the drums

The owner of the studio, Kai, is a pretty good musician. At the end of the shoot, Kai set up his drum kit directly under the rainfall set and proceeded to bang (or should that be play?) his drums. I got way too many images shooting on a "spray and pray" basis trying to capture the splashes as Kai hit the drums so using the fractal filter made more sense to me:

As I process the images made with this filter, it becomes more apparent that the price I paid of £20 shows in the images. All sorts of errors with chromatic aberrations and other lens errors with complicated names start to appear.

About me:
I usually specialise in shooting lightpainting images but occasionally dabble in urbex and artistic model photography. I'm always on the lookout for someone to collaborate with; please don't hesitate to get in touch if you'd like to create art.

Really cool. I was once searching for something like this but couldn't figure out how this filter was called. Now searching with fractal filter i find many results. So thanks for this post 🙂

Cool set mate.

Yay! 🤗
