A few years ago I was lucky enough to be able to spend three months on a small Caribbean island doing nothing but living and windsurfing. We even rented a house right on the ocean. It was Heaven on Earth.
Each day was pretty much the same. Get up, sit at the beach, have breakfast, go windsurfing, stay there all day, come home late afternoon, prepare the BBQ, sip a glass of wine while watching the sun set, have dinner, go to bed. Rinse and repeat. Perfection.
As for most Caribbean islands tourism is the islanders' main source of income and a lot (!) of those tourists come on board one of those floating skyscrapers a.k.a. cruise ships. Oftentimes they arrive early morning and leave at night, giving tourists the option to 'explore' some of the island. We usually watched these ships during our dinner when they left our island's port to sail to their next destination stop.
I realize that there are very many people who love this kind of travel, but I will readily admit that I don't understand why. Yes, it is convenient, service, aircon, all-inclusive probably, but - where's the adventure? Maybe not even adventure, but the unknown? If everything is planned by the minute, what happens to spontaneity and curiosity and exploration?
Don't get me wrong, I'm pretty sure I could go on cruise - for a couple of days. Especially if I had a good book, but then what? I'd be bored. Yes, our regular days we spent on the island were all the same, pretty much, but - we had options. We could say 'let's go to the park' or 'let's go snorkeling' or 'let's be veggies at home' - all possible in the blink of an eye. Not possible on a cruise ship, right.
So, tell me - have you been on a cruise? Do you love or hate it? I'm genuinely curious to hear pros and cons, other opinions.
In any case, I think the cruise ships made for some great pictures. And it was always fun to think... and they're sailing into the sun! 😍
