Second day in Venice: art, history and magic on the Grand Canal
Hello everyone, Hive friends! Here I am again with the story of my trip to Venice. If you missed the first one, you can catch up on it here.
The day begins with the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth
Today I take you with me on my second day in this magical city, lived intensely together with my boyfriend on December 30, 2023. A day full of art, history and unforgettable moments, which I can't wait to share with you!
The day begins with the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth
We started the day like real tourists by visiting the Church of Santa Maria di Nazareth, also known as the Church of the Discalced. This beautiful baroque church is located right next to the Venice Santa Lucia station and is a jewel of sacred art.
Built in the 17th century and designed by architect Baldassare Longhena, the church is striking for its splendid marble façade, the work of Giuseppe Sardi, rich in decorations and sculptures. Inside, the frescoed ceiling is a masterpiece by Tiepolo: “The Transport of the House of Loreto”, unfortunately damaged by the bombings of the Second World War, but subsequently carefully restored. I took some pictures to immortalize the timeless beauty of this place.
Campo di Santa Fosca and the statue of Paolo Sarpi
After leaving the Church of Santa Mary of Nazareth, we immersed ourselves in the magic of the Venetian streets and, walking aimlessly, we arrived in Campo di Santa Fosca. Here is the statue of Paolo Sarpi, an important Venetian theologian and historian of the 16th century.
Sarpi is best known for his role in defending the autonomy of the Republic of Venice against the interference of the Catholic Church. His statue, erected in the 19th century, depicts him with a thoughtful look and a book in his hand, a symbol of his vast culture and intellectual determination. A fascinating historical figure who deserves to be remembered.
The beauty of the alleys and the Teatro Italia
Walking through the Venetian alleys is like entering a painting: the narrow streets, the stone bridges and the silently flowing canals offer unforgettable views. Among these, we came across the Teatro Italia, a historic building that today houses a supermarket.
Inaugurated in 1916 as a cinema and theatre, the Teatro Italia is an extraordinary example of neo-Gothic architecture. Although today it has a completely different function, it still preserves the splendid interior frescoes and its decorated façade, which tell a piece of the city's cultural history. A stop here allowed us to reflect on how Venice manages to combine past and present in such a unique way.
La Fenice: a theater risen from the ashes
Our journey then continued with a visit to the magnificent Teatro La Fenice, one of the most famous opera houses in the world. This place is not only a symbol of Venetian culture, but also a testimony of resilience: destroyed by fires several times throughout its history (the last in 1996), it was rebuilt with incredible dedication to bring it back to its original splendor.
Inside, we were enchanted by the main hall, with its frescoed ceiling, golden boxes and majestic atmosphere. Thanks to the audio guide, we discovered fascinating stories, such as that of Maria Callas, who lived some of the most glorious moments of her career here. This theater is truly a temple of music and art, and I couldn't resist taking tons of photos to preserve the memory of this unforgettable visit.
A unique gondola ride
After La Fenice, we couldn't leave Venice without taking a gondola ride. Thanks to a friend of a dear friend's boyfriend, we were lucky enough to take a special ride, far from the tourist routes more crowded.
It was magical to see Venice from the water, crossing the most hidden canals and listening to the stories of our gondolier, who explained to us how demanding and prestigious the job of those who guide these iconic boats is. We also observed how the gondoliers interact with each other, speaking a fascinating dialect and incomprehensible traits. An experience that we will remember forever.
Doge's Palace and the Bridge of Sighs
Our last stop of the day was the majestic Doge's Palace, a symbol of power and of the history of Venice. This extraordinary building, once the seat of the Doge and the Venetian government, is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Inside, we spent hours admiring the rooms decorated with frescoes, paintings by great masters such as Tintoretto and Veronese, and the famous Hall of the Maggior Consiglio, one of the largest of Europe.
We also crossed the famous Bridge of Sighs, which connects the palace to the New Prisons. The bridge owes its name to the fact that prisoners, passing through here, would cast a last glance at freedom before being locked up. A place full of emotions and history.
Christmas lights and night magic
Leaving the Doge's Palace, we found ourselves immersed in the magical Christmas atmosphere of Venice. The Christmas lights illuminated the streets and squares, creating a unique and romantic atmosphere. A perfect end to such a busy day.

La giornata inizia con la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth
Oggi vi porto con me nel mio secondo giorno in questa magica città, vissuto intensamente insieme al mio ragazzo il 30 dicembre 2023. Una giornata ricca di arte, storia e momenti indimenticabili, di cui non vedo l’ora di parlarvi!
La giornata inizia con la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth
Abbiamo iniziato la giornata come dei veri turisti visitando la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth, conosciuta anche come la Chiesa degli Scalzi. Questa meravigliosa chiesa barocca si trova proprio vicino alla stazione di Venezia Santa Lucia ed è un gioiello dell’arte sacra.
Costruita nel XVII secolo su progetto dell’architetto Baldassare Longhena, la chiesa colpisce per la sua splendida facciata marmorea, opera di Giuseppe Sardi, ricca di decorazioni e sculture. All’interno, il soffitto affrescato è un capolavoro del Tiepolo: “Il Trasporto della Casa di Loreto”, purtroppo danneggiato dai bombardamenti della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, ma successivamente restaurato con cura. Ho scattato qualche foto per immortalare la bellezza senza tempo di questo luogo.
Campo di Santa Fosca e la statua di Paolo Sarpi
Dopo aver lasciato la Chiesa di Santa Maria di Nazareth, ci siamo immersi nella magia delle calli veneziane e, passeggiando senza una meta precisa, siamo arrivati in Campo di Santa Fosca. Qui si trova la statua di Paolo Sarpi, un importante teologo e storico veneziano del XVI secolo.
Sarpi è noto soprattutto per il suo ruolo di difensore dell’autonomia della Repubblica di Venezia contro le ingerenze della Chiesa cattolica. La sua statua, eretta nel XIX secolo, lo rappresenta con uno sguardo pensieroso e il libro in mano, simbolo della sua vasta cultura e della sua determinazione intellettuale. Una figura storica affascinante che merita di essere ricordata.
La bellezza dei vicoletti e il Teatro Italia
Passeggiare tra i vicoletti veneziani è come entrare in un dipinto: le calli strette, i ponti in pietra e i canali che scorrono silenziosi regalano scorci indimenticabili. Tra questi, ci siamo imbattuti nel Teatro Italia, un edificio storico che oggi ospita un supermercato.
Inaugurato nel 1916 come sala cinematografica e teatrale, il Teatro Italia è un esempio straordinario di architettura neogotica. Anche se oggi ha una funzione completamente diversa, conserva ancora gli splendidi affreschi interni e la sua facciata decorata, che raccontano un pezzo di storia culturale della città. Una sosta qui ci ha permesso di riflettere su come Venezia riesca a coniugare passato e presente in modo unico.
La Fenice: un teatro risorto dalle ceneri
Il nostro viaggio è poi continuato con la visita al magnifico Teatro La Fenice, uno dei teatri d’opera più famosi al mondo. Questo luogo non è solo un simbolo della cultura veneziana, ma anche una testimonianza di resilienza: distrutto da incendi più volte nel corso della sua storia (l’ultimo nel 1996), è stato ricostruito con una dedizione incredibile per riportarlo al suo splendore originale.
All’interno, siamo rimasti incantati dalla sala principale, con il suo soffitto affrescato, i palchi dorati e l’atmosfera maestosa. Grazie all’audioguida, abbiamo scoperto storie affascinanti, come quella di Maria Callas, che qui ha vissuto alcuni dei momenti più gloriosi della sua carriera. Questo teatro è davvero un tempio della musica e dell’arte, e non ho resistito a scattare tantissime foto per conservare il ricordo di questa visita indimenticabile.
Un giro in gondola unico
Dopo La Fenice, non potevamo lasciare Venezia senza fare un giro in gondola. Grazie all’amico del ragazzo di una mia cara amica, abbiamo avuto la fortuna di fare un giro speciale, lontano dai percorsi turistici più affollati.
È stato magico vedere Venezia dall’acqua, attraversare i canali più nascosti e ascoltare le storie del nostro gondoliere, che ci ha spiegato quanto sia impegnativo e prestigioso il lavoro di chi guida queste imbarcazioni iconiche. Abbiamo anche osservato come i gondolieri interagiscono tra loro, parlando un dialetto affascinante e a tratti incomprensibile. Un’esperienza che ricorderemo per sempre.
Palazzo Ducale e il Ponte dei Sospiri
La nostra ultima tappa della giornata è stata il maestoso Palazzo Ducale, un simbolo del potere e della storia di Venezia. Questo straordinario edificio, un tempo sede del Doge e del governo veneziano, è un capolavoro di architettura gotica. All’interno, abbiamo passato ore ad ammirare le sale decorate con affreschi, dipinti di grandi maestri come Tintoretto e Veronese, e la famosa Sala del Maggior Consiglio, una delle più grandi d’Europa.
Abbiamo anche attraversato il celebre Ponte dei Sospiri, che collega il palazzo alle Prigioni Nuove. Il ponte deve il suo nome al fatto che i prigionieri, passando da qui, lanciavano un ultimo sguardo alla libertà prima di essere rinchiusi. Un luogo carico di emozioni e storia.
Luci di Natale e magia notturna
Usciti dal Palazzo Ducale, ci siamo ritrovati immersi nella magica atmosfera natalizia di Venezia. Le luci di Natale illuminavano le calli e i campi, creando un’atmosfera unica e romantica. Una conclusione perfetta per una giornata così intensa.
