The “loveable” Meerkat ....possibly the most photogenic animal

The wonderful and photogenic Meerkat is a favorite of mine. Yes ....we can talk about how it is part of the Mongoose family and it originates from South Africa.

But to me....they are a JOY to watch ....a JOY to photograph and interesting animals. If you go to the Zoo, what does a leopard do, what does a rhino do, what does a monkey do.....not much usually.

The Meerkat acts like it is in the wild. It’s moving. It’s on alert and patrol constantly from predators. They communicate and work as a family. They are so cool.

This is why they are standing up, they are seeking a “high point” to be on the look out for birds....even in a zoo because their cage is open top.

They take turns and the senior members take the lead. Meerkat communication is sudden and vital when there is danger. They will scurry into their holes when they get the alert.

They usually live in social groups of up to 30 members..called a “mob” and for the most part a Meerkat can live 12-14 years.

The Meerkat comes out in the morning to feed and is a carnivore. They will eat bugs and termites, spiders or even small snakes. They are at most a foot tall and slight in frame. You don’t see a “fat Meerkat”.

They will use forage for food 5-8 hours a day and this is why they are on ‘alert’. They are eating in broad daylight and at night they hide from night predators....but during the day there are many animals that could attack.

With Meerkats, there is “strength in numbers”. They work as a pack. They defend their area they live in as a pack. This is what makes them a joy to observe. They act just like they do in the wild.

All of these photos were taken with a Nikon V1 (70-300 zoom lens).

Next time you get a chance to go a zoo, ask if they have Meerkats. You won’t be disappointed.

Thank you so much for reading !
