I have spent all my life to the south half of Greece. But there is a beautiful region at the north that I hardly know. My first acquaintance with this part of the country was during my military service and as you may suspect, it was not a very thorough one. And so many years later I still haven't explore it properly.
I do have though a few pictures from a road trip to north Greece to share with you that I feel that they worth viewing!
Sidirokastro is built under a huge granite boulder that is impossible to ignore! It is the first thing to see and take pictures of, when you approach the town.
A little more than 100 years ago it was populated mainly by Turks and Bulgarians while Greeks along with Roma and Vlachs were minorities. And the old houses that still stand are there to remind the different cultures that used to coexist there.
25 km to the south is the town of Serres. I was just passing by but I did make a stop for a couple of panoramic pictures of the town and the remains of the Byzantine castle.
The next stop was 4 hours driving away but I really enjoyed that route. The highway was brand new, the mountains around me majestic, decorated by the first snow and my destination the lovely town of Ioannina and a delicious dinner by the lake :)

Love the red roofs on the buildings.
They are kind of cute indeed :)
After looking at your photos, I think of two things ..., give up photography or try to photograph better.
Looking at the photos I feel a peace and joy that these true beauties exist, of course, Greece is partly to blame.
I am just the messenger :)Thank you very much @bluemoon for your vote of confidence!
You are modest, you are much more than a messenger!
What magnificent photos. I'm sure it was so special and totally unexpected to when you were in the military @fotostef! To finish beside the lake must've been a feast for your eyes as well as your stomach!
