Hello hivers and welcome to my blog. Last Sunday, after my Tai chi classes in the park, I had planned to go take photos at a classic car exhibition but when I got to the place there wasn't a single one hahaha, apparently they changed it for the afternoon 🤷🏻♀️, As I was already on the path that leads to Ribas Square, the main square in the city of La Victoria, I realized that there was music so when I arrived I found my sister, and another good reason to take photos hehehe, nothing more and nothing less than the meeting of Saint John the Baptist.
Saint John the Baptist's Day is one of the most popular holidays for Christians, but in Venezuela, its meaning extends beyond to mix with Afro-Venezuelan traditions and also to decree the end of the dry season and the beginning of the rains. In short, the mystical and the profane come together to give rise to a colorful and very joyful celebration.

Each June 24 marks the birth of John the Baptist, the prophet who baptized Jesus. The festivities begin on the 23rd at night and in the early morning, the devotees drink alcohol and smoke tobacco between the rhythms of the drums until dawn. On the morning of the 24th they take the saint who is represented inside a small altar for a walk.

June 24 had already passed, but that day, the San Juaneros, which is how the devotees, companions and members of the brotherhoods of San Juan Bautista are called, were celebrating the 30th anniversary of the annual meeting that brings together the different brotherhoods of the state of Aragua. Under the awning were the musicians and singers and also the tables where each brotherhood set up its altar after dancing with the saint. When I arrived there were already a few there so I took the opportunity to take photos of them.

Some brotherhoods represent Saint John the Baptist with the image of an adult and others with that of a child, associated with his birth. Each brotherhood dresses the saint differently and you can see clothes with striking fabrics, sequins, satin or lace, although there are those who prefer to show him with his simplicity and humility and only put a blanket on him, just as the Baptist wore when he preached his prophecies. What is not missing from any altar are flowers, many flowers, especially yellow flowers, a color associated with Saint John the Baptist.

When I arrived there was a brotherhood that was dancing to the saint, the person in charge carries the altar on his head while dancing to the rhythm of the drums and the songs that accompany the procession, at times he lowers it and turns it from one side to the other with the hands.

Although Saint John the Baptist is a Christian character, the origin of this celebration coincides with pagan rites carried out by the American Indians since ancient times and very distant from the arrival of the colonizers. At that time, they worshiped the sun and the arrival of the summer solstice in the northern hemisphere. Later, in the 18th century, African slave communities began to associate Saint John the Baptist with their culture as a symbol of resistance and freedom.

The morning was very sunny and hot and if it weren't for the fact that we knew we were in the square, anyone could have imagined that the sea was nearby hehe, all the color of the dresses, the flags and the small altars filled the place with a powerful energy that intensified with each beat of the drums. Some girls were running around moving the skirts of their dresses, the adults were talking and even a dog was running around among the people excited by the rampage hahaha.

Suddenly songs began to be heard, a new brotherhood was arriving at the square with its joy, its dances and its straw hats. I decided to follow them very closely so I stretched out to take photos from above and also crouched down to feel part of the celebration hehehe.
