Fin Whales in Wild Alaska

image.png

We had left Sand Point and headed for Devils Bay about 10 miles from our Anchorage we were greeted by these beautiful mammals again. I really did not expect anything from this day, but that's just sailing for you, there's always something new around the corner. This makes sailing so special.

Last time, I highlighted the struggles I faced capturing whales and how I had messed up some previous attempts. Even though I got some beautiful shots, was I happy with them? No, because I knew I could do better.

As soon as I had the drone in the air, I ended up in a situation where every scene in every direction was so visually rich, it felt criminal not trying to capture everything.

We had at least 12 whales in front of the boat and another 2 behind us. The ones in front dispersed quickly and disappeared. I had to swiftly return to the whale in the photo. The scenery was stunning - snow-covered mountains - and I had just 25 minutes of flight time per battery to capture it all.

image.png Fin whales are streamlined and therefore are the fastest, reaching speeds of up to 29 mph.

I'm very happy with these shots now, but I do hope I will be able to get to capture whales again.

Thank you for reading. If you want to see whale breaching, watch the video below.
