I am not about to lie – the keen thing that attracted us to Paphos was its beaches. For the Czechs, the sea is always something unusual and special. My Spanish girlfriend, on the other hand, cannot imagine summer without swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Since the Cypriot division in the 70’s which rendered some of the most famous beaches inaccessible, Paphos has become a tourist hotspot. For a reason. Putting aside its archaeological sites that are worth seeing anyways, I definitely prefer its beaches over those in Limassol, Larnaca or Girne, the other coastal towns we visited this summer.
We planned on renting bikes in the hotel and riding them North along the coast – as there’s a brand new bike path – and swimming in every beach we would like. Alas, all the bikes had been already rented, so we had to walk. We headed South instead as there were more beaches within walking distance. Speaking about the beaches South of Paphos, Greek goddess of love and beauty Aphrodite (Venus in Roman mythology) was born from the sea foam on one of them. That’s why she was sometimes called Lady of Cyprus. By Homer, for instance (well, at least in the Czech translation i read). Aphrodite’s beach is rather secluded, though, and you may need a car to get there safely.
Nebudu lhát, to hlavní, co nás přivedlo do Paphosu, byly místní pláže. Pro nás Čechy je moře vždycky něco zvláštního, však to znáte. A T. si naopak neumí představit léto bez toho, aby si zaplavala ve Středozemním moři. Od rozdělení Kypru v sedmdesátých letech byly některé známé pláže na severu ostrova nedostupné, a tak turistická důležitost Paphosu rostla. Nikoli bezdůvodně. Ponechme stranou [archeologické památky], které stojí za návštěvu. Pláže v Paphosu se mi líbí mnohem víc než ty v Larnace, Limassolu nebo v Girne, které jsme také navštivili.
Původně jsme si chtěli půjčit kola a vyrazit po zbrusu nové cyklostezce na sever od města s tím, že se vykoupeme na každé pláži, která se nám bude líbit. Ale ouha, všechna kola už byla půjčená, a tak jsme museli po svých. Vydali jsme se na jih, protože tím směrem je víc pláží v docházkové vzdálenosti. A když už jsme u toho jižního směru, na jedné z těhle pláží se z mořské pěny zrodila Afrofité, řecká bohyně lásky a krásy. Proto se jí někdy říkalo Kypřanka, třeba v Homérově Illiadě. Asi ji znáte spíš jako Venuši z římské mytologie. Afroditina pláž je trochu dál od města a nejsnáze a nejbezpečněji se k ní dostanete autem.
A nonguarded rocky beach, nameless as far as I know. It would be most likely empty even during the peak season. Once you get through the slippery rocks, you can enjoy the open sea with a view to the famous shipwreck. Well, you'll see it from almost any beach...

Kamenitá pláž bez plavčíka, pokud vím, beze jména. Pravděpodobně bude liduprázdná i uprostřed turistické sezony. Když zdoláte kluzké kameny, můžete si užít plavání v otevřeném moři s výhledem na známý vrak. Ten koneckonců uvidíte prakticky z jakékoli pláže.
The furthest edge of the Venus beach (yes, it is a trap – it is not the actual Aphrodite beach, yet somebody was wit enough to name it this way). As the beach beds and portable kiosks are on the other edge, just a few people come here.

Nejvzdálenější konec Venušiny pláže (ano, je to past na turisty, pochopitelně nejde o pravou pláž Afrodité, ale nějaký chytrák si poradil takhle). Protože lehátka a kiosky jsou na druhém konci pláže, moc lidí sem nechodí.
At the very end of Lighthouse Coastal Broadwalk, there are two piers used by the locals as fishing hotspots. Yet you can swim in there as well. Just like the previous recommendations, this place will hardly get as crowded as some other beaches.

Na samém konci Lighthouse Coastal Broadwalk jsou dvě mola, ze kterých místní obvykle rybaří. A vy si tu můžete krásně zaplavat. Stejně jako má předchozí doporučení, ani tady by nemělo být přelidněno.
My very last tip is for those that prefer sandy beaches. This place a bit aside of the buzz, yet near Lighthouse Beach Bar. Could be great for swimming with kids.

Můj poslední tip je pro ty, kteří dávají přednost písečným plážím. Tahle je taky stranou od turistického ruchu, a přesto je hned vedle Lighthouse Beach baru. Může být skvělá, když s sebou máte děti.

I always look taking a look at these kind of places as I might never have the opportunity to see them for life. Nature really gave us some wonderful things to stare at.
