After hiking almost 30 kilometres in the Troodos Mountains and visiting Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis church, an UNESCO heritage site, we finally arrived at our destination for that day – the village of Kakopetria. I hadn’t seek for any information about it, I just thought we would sleep over in a cozy local place for a bargain price (mere 50 EUR for the night and breakfast for two!) and hit the road to Nicósia, the capital city of both Greek and Turkish parts of the island. Well, Kakopetria is a place you shall not miss once you’re in the Cypriot mountains. Give it a day, it is worth it!
Po skoro třicetikilometrové horské túře a návštěvě kostela Agios Nikolas tis Stegis, památky UNESCO, jsme konečně dorazili do cíle. Do vesnice Kakopetria.
Entering Kakopetria. Oh wait! That’s a marvellous place, isn’t it? Fortunately, we weren’t in a time crunch so we could rearrange our schedule and leave for Nicósia later than we had expected.
Vcházíme do Kakopetrie. A hele, tady to vypadá krásně! Naštěstí jsme nebyli v časovém presu, takže jsme mohli odložit odjezd do Nikósie na později.
Narrow cobbled alleys look just like they did centuries ago.
Úzké dlážděné uličky vypadají stejně jako před staletími.
The houses were build with sun-dried bricks and stones from the Katorkis riverbed (see our hike by the Katorkis river. Typical features of local architecture are trussed roofs supported by wooden beams, usually covered with reeds and tiles. As Kakopetria used to play an important role in Cypriot food industry, you can buy many local and handmade products in a small stores like this one.
But as we arrived exhausted, we checked in and went out to dine.

The nature trail
No worries, this one is just about 1 kilometre long and will take you around the village and the source of its wealth – the Katorkis. It is the only river on the island that didn’t dry up during Cypriot hot summers, which made Kakopetria the best place to build up water mills that used to grind flour for the whole island. The Katorkis also makes the surrounding area very fertile.
Klídek, tahle naučná stezka má jen asi kilometr. Provede vás vesnicí a taky kolem zdroje jejího bohatství, řeky Katorkis.

The riverside landscape doesn’t seem much Cypriot to me, it looks way different that what we saw anywhere else on the island.
A bit about the new Kakopetria
Obviously, the historical village has a modern town/village next to it. With paved roads accessible to cars and buses and so. The boundary is marked with this “Rock of the Couple”, that gave name to the place. “Kakos petra” means bad rock in Greek. Legend has it that centuries ago a wedding took place just next to this boulder. When the newlyweds danced around it in some kind of ritual, the rock suddenly shook and rolled over them.
Praise Jesus, salute to the Cypriot war heroes and drink KEO beer. That's how I understand this message.
