When Colombia meets Germany in Prague / Když se v Praze potká Kolumbie s Německem

Moritz Gröbe was a successful German entrepreneur who made his fortune in Prague in the second half of the 19th century. Back then, Bohemia and Prague belonged to the Austrian empire and the official language was German. Even though Gröbe spent most of his life abroad, he had leaned towards German nationalism, supported German societies and organizations in Bohemia and poor Germans living in Prague. In his prime, he was able to build up a huge Neo-Renaissance park with a grotto, a vineyard, and last but not least, a large villa with a German-style wooden pavilion at a hill that used to be at the edge of Prague. Even though the park bears the name of Karel Havlíček Borovský, one of the keen persons of the Czech National Revival, since it was purchased by the Prague city council in 1905, almost everybody still calls it “Gröbovka”.

In that arguably most German-style place in Prague (along with Goethe-Institut and German embassy), a festival of Colombian culture took place. As a friend of mine spent several years in Colombia and I speak a bit of Spanish (thanks to my Spanish girlfriend), we simply had to attend.

Moritz Gröbe byl veleúspěšný pražský podnikatel německého původu druhé poloviny devatenáctého století. I když žil po většinu života v českých zemích, byl na svůj německý původ hrdý a Němce podporoval, jak se dalo. Přispíval na jejich spolky a v Čechách žijící chudé. Na české chudé ovšem nikoli. Vzmohl se natolik, že si mohl dovolit vybudovat dnešní Havlíčkovy sady - rozsáhlý park s umělou jeskyní, vinohradem, velkou vilou a dřevěným pavilonem. Vše v německém stylu. I když se park od doby, kdy ho na začátku minulého století koupila Praha, jmenuje po jednom z našich klíčových národních buditelů, dodnes se mu říká Gröbovka. Takhle to vypadá, když se v jednom z nejvíce německých míst v Praze koná festival kolumbijské kultury.
