Hverfjall Volcano Crater

Hverfjall is a dormant volcano crater near the Lake Myvatn in northern Iceland. I visited this on my first trip to Iceland as well but it was a bit cloudy at the top so I wasn't able to see a good areal view. So we decided to go back there on the second trip as well. This time the clouds were not so low and I could get a nice overview.

Hverfjall erupted about 2000 years ago and has been quiet ever since. The crater itself is 420m high, above sea level. Hiking up there does not take long but it's quite steep so probably not too easy for everyone.

This is a panorama of 2 horizontal frames.

Dont let the picture fool you, It might look small but it actually is really deep. On the first trip we tried to walk down but only made a halfway down until we realized that it takes us too long to complete this. On the first trip we also walked a circle on the rim of the crater, it took us 45 minutes.

This time sadly we did not have enough time to walk on the rim so we visited the summit and walk back down after 10 minutes.

Here are some more shots taken of the surrounding landscapes. On the first photo is Lake Myvatn, Fast and furious 8 is filmed on this lake.

Someday we will go back there and hike down to the middle of the crater, just need to prepare some time for this.
