Arriving at Lake Sevan late afternoon, the sun already over the horizon, it was, how can I put this?
Fucking freezing! There be a storm blowing in
Covering an area of 340S miles, Lake Sevan is the largest lake in the Caucuses, and at 6,200 ft above sea level is one of the largest fresh water high altitude bodies of water in the world.
and guess where this was snapped from?
yup, you got it another churchy complex.
There has been a monastery here since the 9th century of the common era, and the land was originally an island, which became a peninsula when Uncle Joe drained the lake causing a drop of level circa 60 ft.
The complex consists of two churches:
Surp Arakelots meaning the "Holy Apostles" and Surp Astvatsatsin meaning the "Holy Mother of God
Both of which were heavily restored in the 1950's.
It was quite a hike up here but there were several people busy lighting candles, I just stood near them to try and get some warmth back into my bones
There are no spectacular stories of mischief and mayhem no outstanding bits of architecture to see but Sevanavank is one of the most visited tourism sights in Armenia.
So that was it time to face the challenge of a downhill jog back to the warmth of the bus
such dramatic skies and WOW that monastery sure has some history if the walls could talk

The monastery is very special - must have been something when people needed to go by boat there. Nice photos the dramatic skies and the elevation provided some unnecessary cooling. Hope you had a chance to warm up.
warm up!! we arrived at the hotel for an overnight stay, without our leader's knowledge they had closed and we were shunted to another massive hotel which was also shut and not geared up for visitors, but they accommodated us the only food and drink was snacks from a vending machine and it was warmer outside!!!
extra couple of duvets required, but hey that's the fun of travelling it was only for one night.
