Mono Lake Flip Light Painting

in Photography Lovers3 years ago (edited)

A night with alien life forms.

For many years I have been fascinated with Mono Lake in California. The lake's location is perfect for road trips. When coming out of Yosemite heading east it is a great stopover. To where ever you want to go next.

For me, it is always important to get a bit of a night at these special places. The moon-like landscape and animals living in and around the lake do not exist anywhere else. So on my travel list, a big fat must.

What I show here this time is yet another Camera Rotation Light Painting. The shoreline of Mono Lake.

Seit vielen Jahren fasziniert mich Mono Lake in Kalifornien.

What I love about this shot is that I got the chance to shoot still during the Blue Hour. The Sky always looks better with the tint of Blue. The darker the blue the cooler it comes out in shots like this.

Ok what happened here?

What you see is a camera rotation. I set up the camera on the tripod looking down the shore. The camera sits on a rotation head and I light up the beach, then cover the lens and rotate the head. Then repeat the procedure when the camera is rotated 180°. This is why you see parts of the beach imprinted in the sky and vice versa.

Camera Rotation what?

Not too long ago I wrote up an article on the topic. It has been published on my website and here on Hive as a blog post.
Camera Rotation belongs certainly to Kinetic photography and it is not a very common technique amongst photographers. Light Paintings are choreographed movements with light tools carried out with the camera during a single exposure. During a Camera Rotation, the light sources are often in a fixed position about the camera, and the light trails are then drawn into the picture solely by the camera movements.

These are my two rigs for the camera rotation.

It all comes down to having the camera in different positions or moving “around” during the image. To do so you will need some fixation of your camera. See the image above. There are multiple methods to the madness. As a LightPainter, I would use two major categories. A) Lens is open during the entire Rotation exposure time and B) Closing the lens during the rotation steps and open to imprint the chosen scene. What follows is that people get creative and mix all sorts of methods. For the featured Light Painting, it was the latter.

See the making of using this technique.

As if it was a picture taken from deep space, the merging of water with the color of the sky gave the picture a wonderful view, great pic bruh!

That's a wonderful analogy. Super glad you like it😃

Wow it's so impressive, this is the first time I heard about camera rotation. Thanks for sharing!

Go have a look at the article on my website. You'll find some more cool examples and ideas 😎
Glad you like it and thank you for your support.

Beautiful! I wanna experiment a bit... the only thing that stop me, it's the frozen temperatures :)

You deserve my little support!!

"You deserve my little support!!"
Your support means a lot. It's so interesting how some curation trails can add up and make a huge difference.

More important to me are the actual active conversations and signs that there is another human being interested in what one does. Thats the cool part.
Cheers

Thank you very much for your kind words, they are a lot appreciated... and yes i'm really interested in this kind of photography!
Have a good night!

That's an amazing way to take a picture, which now looks quite symmetric.

I have never considered doing such a rotation, but I may now as it is not too complicated to put in place (and the effect is great). Of course, I won't be able to do as well as you did, as I am by no means a pro.

Cheers!
