Many times I have seen images of this sculpture church thingy. Always wondered what I would see going there. What would my brain make me do there?
Here is more or less a simplisitic location check if anything. Checking a few vantage points around the subject. Check it out!
Über die Jahre hab ich viele Bilder dieser Kunstinstallation gesehen und immer fragte ich mich was ich wohl sehe wenn ich mal da bin. Was macht mein Hirn draus und welche Ideen kommen mir.
Hier teile ich heute mit euch mein ersten Besuch hier. So mein erster Lokationscheck.
On my way to another location, I wanted to check out what's possible at least here quickly. I arrived just before sunset. The clouds were amazing and a few other photographers were just finishing as the sun was "gone under". But that's usually when I start right.
Auf dem Weg zu einer anderen Location wollte ich noch schnell schauen, was zumindest hier möglich ist. Ich kam kurz vor Sonnenuntergang an. Die Wolken waren unglaublich und ein paar andere Fotografen waren gerade dabei, zu packen, als die Sonne "untergegangen" war. Aber das ist wenn wir hier erst anfangen.
The Location
Reading Between the Lines is an innovative sculpture located in Borgloon, a small town in Belgium’s Limburg province. Prepare to walk for a bit. It was designed by Belgian architects Pieterjan Gijs and Arnout Van Vaerenbergh as part of the Z-OUT project, which aims to integrate contemporary art into the landscape. The sculpture was completed in 2011.
This artwork, also known as "Doorkijkkerk" (literally, "See-through Church"), is made of 100 stacked steel plates, arranged in such a way that the church seems solid from some angles but becomes nearly transparent from others. It stands 10 meters high and resembles the classic silhouette of a traditional church, blending into the surrounding countryside.
The sculpture creates a visual experience that constantly changes depending on the viewer's perspective.
Reading Between the Lines ist eine sehr cool Skulptur, die in Borgloon in der belgischen Provinz Limburg, steht. Sie wurde von den belgischen Architekten Pieterjan Gijs und Arnout Van Vaerenbergh im Rahmen des Z-OUT-Projekts entworfen, das darauf abzielt, zeitgenössische Kunst in die Landschaft zu integrieren. Die Skulptur entstand 2011.
Das Teil ist auch bekannt als "Doorkijkkerk" (wörtlich „Durchblickkirche“), besteht aus 100 gestapelten Stahlplatten, die so angeordnet sind, dass die Kirche aus bestimmten Blickwinkeln solide wirkt, aber aus anderen fast transparent erscheint. Sie ist 10 Meter hoch und ähnelt der Silhouette einer klassischen Kirche (is aber keine!).
Die Skulptur kreiert ein visuelles Erlebnis, das sich je nach Blickwinkel ständig verändert.
The Details
I really loved going inside and experiencing the thing inside out. Everything changes wherever you stand. Super cool!
Einfach auch reinzugehen und die verschiedenen Blickwinkel wahrzunehmen war schon sehr cool!
As soon as it got dark I got my flashlights out and tested how the rust would react to the orange and red. Looking straight into the church and up.
Als es endlich dunkel wurde, holte ich die Lampen heraus und testete, wie der Rost auf das Orange und Rot reagieren würde. Ich schaute direkt in die Kirche und nach oben.

The composition
Walking around the subject you quickly find there is actually not that much going on. There is only a very limited number of pleasing vantage points for a photo. For the light painting, I wanted to make sure I showed the light coming rom the inside as well as the light applied also from the outside.
Wenn man um das Objekt herumgeht, merkt man schnell, dass eigentlich nicht so viel geht wie man hofft. Es gibt nur eine sehr begrenzte Anzahl an reizvollen Blickwinkeln für ein Foto. Beim Lightpainting war mich wichtig, dass ich das Licht sowohl von innen bekomme, als auch das von außen angeleuchtete.
A model would have been nice to show perspective and scale. As you see I also shed some light on the tree on the left. At first, I did not see much of it so I kind of forgot to do it to the one on the right as well. Would have been nice to have a little more detail on the right tree as well .. a small mistake on my end here.
Ein Model wäre noch cool gewesen, um Perspektive und Maßstab zu zeigen. Wie Ihr seht, habe ich auch den Baum links leicht eingeleuchtet. Zunächst habe ich ihn nicht wirklich ne gute Wirkung gesehen, so hab ich dann dem Baum rechts leider vergessen. Rechts mehr bissle Licht wäre schön gewesen ... ein kleiner Fehler meinerseits.
Indirect Shadow Selfie
Since i did not have a model I chose to put my shadow in at least. Wondering around applying the light inside and outside the sculpture was one part then imprinting my shadow in the front corner.
Ich hatte ja kein Model, so entschied ich mich, zumindest meinen Schatten einzubauen. Licht innen und außerhalb der Skulptur, war ein Teil, dann musste ich nur noch meinen Schatten in die vordere Ecke setzen.
Look from the other side
While I was still photographing the scene the moon was rising behind me. In hope it would give me a cool effect I went back to the other side to see what works. It wasn't all that cool, but it provided a partial glow behind the church. More clouds would increase the drama but hey I did not want to spend forever here so I gave it just a few more shots.
Während ich noch die eine Szene fotografierte, ging der Mond hinter mir auf. In der Hoffnung, dass er einen coolen Effekt bringen würde, ging ich wieder neugierig auf die andere Seite. Es war jetzt nicht so geil, aber es gab einen leichten Schein hinter der Kirche. Mehr Wolken hätten mir etwas mehr Drama gegeben, aber ich wollte nicht ewig hier verbringen, also machte ich nur noch ein paar weitere Aufnahmen.

Very interesting monument @gunnarheilmann. I liked the lighting effects. I believe the lines helped to bring light colors. I just imagined a model standing inside the church and extending his/her arms to the sky. A photo of a character inside, trying to reach or communicate to the skies. Just my humble thought...
