Another cool set of Camera Rotation with the explanation of how I got these shots.

Location Scouting

If you follow my channel you already seen that I had a short trip to Japan. My hotel was located super close to the main Tokyo station. Walking around in this area I identified a few spots where I thought I should test some Light Painting or Camera Rotation. On the way to the station, I saw this tower close to one of the subway entrances. I found it very interesting at first and thought I needed to check that one during the night. One of those nights I passed by it later in the evening. To my surprise, there was no spotlight directed at the tower at night. So I could work with that I thought and planned my return with my camera gear.

Wenn du meinem Kanal folgst, hast du bereits gesehen, dass ich gerade mal in Japan war. Mein Hotel war gleich in der Nähe des Hauptbahnhofs von Tokio. Wenn ich also Spazieren gehe schaue ich immer wo ich Light Painting oder Kamerarotation ausprobieren könnte. Auf dem Weg zum Bahnhof sah ich diesen Turm bei einem U-Bahn-Eingang. Der ist aber cool, wie sieht es hier wohl nachts aus? An einem dieser Abende kam ich später am Abend daran vorbei und zu meiner Überraschung gab es nachts keine Scheinwerfer die auf den Turm gerichtet waren. Damit kann ich arbeiten dachte schonmal nach wie ich hier die Kamera drehe.

The Spot and Setup

I don't even know what the tower is good for, I can only guess it is the place for the Air-Co and Air filter system for the subway beneath. But anyhow it looks cool any way you look at it.

Since there was a lot of light pollution I chose an angle in one of the darker areas around the tower and directed the camera straight up. People walking right by the camera would not even show up in the images. The rotational axis was then pretty much parallel to the main axis of the tower.

Ich weiß nicht einmal, wofür der Turm wirklich gut ist; ich kann nur vermuten, dass der Turm für Air-Co und Luftfiltersystem der U-Bahn da ist. Aber wie auch immer, er sieht auf jeden Fall cool aus. Lichtverschmutzung ist hier ein Problem, deshalb suchte ich nach einem dunkleren Bereich um den Turm herum und richtete die Kamera direkt gerade nach oben. Menschen, die direkt an der Kamera vorbeigingen, würden in den Bildern nicht einmal auftauchen. Die Rotationsachse war dann ziemlich parallel zur Hauptachse des Turms.

Test run

As always I wanted to see how long can I expose without blowing the image out and still have time to rotate. When setting up the camera at ISO 400 and the Canon16-35mm lens to F5.6. This gave me approx 30-40 maximum exposure time as long as I don't stay still in the same position.

Wie immer wollte ich sehen, wie lange ich belichten kann, ohne das Bild zu überbelichten, und trotzdem genug Zeit zum Drehen habe. Als ich die Kamera mit ISO 400 und dem Canon 16-35mm Objektiv auf F5.6 einstellte, ergab sich eine maximale Belichtungszeit von etwa 30-40 Sekunden, solange ich nicht in derselben Position stillhalte.

What counts are results

At first you see some mixed method single exposure camera rotations. This means I rotated the camera in steps and then also in slow continues movement while open. I started by leaving the setup still for a few seconds and only then did I rotate the camera slowly by hand while the lens was open and the shutter running.

The first two Camera Rotations have a 22s and 21s exposure time. Remember we are shooting right at a busy intersection next to the main station of Tokyo. The light pollution was a big thing to take into consideration.

Als erstes gibts für euch hier einige Kamerarotationen mit gemischter Technik. Das bedeutet, ich habe die Kamera in Schritten und auch in kontinuierlich-langsamen Bewegungen während der Offenblende gedreht. Ich begann damit, das Setup für einige Sekunden ruhig zu lassen, und erst dann drehte ich die Kamera langsam von Hand, während das Objektiv offen und der Verschluss geöffnet war.

Die ersten beiden Kamerarotationen haben eine Belichtungszeit von 22 bzw. 21 Sekunden. Denk daran, dass wir direkt an einer belebten Kreuzung neben dem Hauptbahnhof von Tokio fotografieren. Die Lichtverschmutzung war hier eine wichtige Überlegung.

Add some subtle texture and color

At times I observed some red tint in my camera rotation images. Quickly I realized that when I exposed the camera while the nearby traffic lights turned red for the cars I had a glimmer of red on the reflective surface of the walls of the tower.

Thinking about it i decided I did like the effect and amplified it at times with my head lamp (it has a red light mode). It was easiest to shine the red light on the darker areas of the tree next to the camera. I also tried the reflective wall but the best effects i had on the tree. Thats where the structure makes it more interesting. Have a closer look at the these two images.

Manchmal fand ich einen rötlichen Farbton in meinen Bildern. Schnell wurde mir klar, dass, wenn ich die Kamera belichtete, während die nahegelegenen Ampeln für die Autos auf Rot umschalteten, ein Hauch von Rot auf der reflektierenden Oberfläche der Turmwände erschien.

Mir gefiel der Effekt, und manchmal verstärkte ich ihn mit meiner Kopflampe. Es war am einfachsten, das rote Licht auf die dunkleren Bereiche des Baumes neben der Kamera zu richten. So gabs sehr coole Strukturen bei der Rotation. Schaut euch diese beiden ruhig genauer an.

Here I really tried to find the balance between the exposure of the tower and the tree to make the treeshow more dominant inside thew tower structure. That is very tricky but worked on some occasions. I do love the effect of those two images.

Hier habe ich wirklich versucht, das Gleichgewicht zwischen der Belichtung des Turms und des Baumes zu finden, um den Baum im Turm dominanter erscheinen zu lassen. Das ist sehr knifflig, hat aber ab und zu ganz gut funktioniert. Ich fands so ziemlich cool.

Camera Rotation what?

Camera Rotation is just what you think. Just find a way to rotate your camera during the exposure. While you have your shutter open and rotate the camera I light up the scene. Everything is done in one single exposure without any trickery. Remember it's not AI or Photoshop effects you see here.

Kamerarotation ist genau das, was du denkst. Finde einfach eine Möglichkeit, deine Kamera während der Belichtung zu drehen. Während du den Verschluss offen hast und die Kamera drehst, leuchte ich die Szene aus. Alles geschieht in einer Belichtung ohne jegliche Täuschung. Denk daran, was du hier siehst dsind keine KI- oder Photoshop-Effekte.
