Notes The patterns, the patterns is what gets me, I wasn't aware that Muslim architecture often has no iconography - hence the importance of patterns in their architecture, rather than say in European architecture were there is many a statue.

Islamic architecture can be insanely intricate. Some periods of Christian European architecture approach its ornamentation, but yes, statues and paintings persist in spite of occasional bouts of iconoclasm.
