What’s up, Hive? I’m currently waiting for @lovejoy to arrive at a sushi place in uptown. We struck out twice it’s our previous attempts. @vermillionfox will be meeting us here as well which should make for a nice evening. Aside from the company, I wanted to get him a copy of the physical edition of Immutable Realms. Season 5 of Pomelo just began and in addition to a grant for Mirrorpool, I’ll be submitting another grant for Immutable Realms as well. I have to say, seeing it in print is quite a rewarding feeling. I’m really proud of how the zine turned out.
I have some new photography to share tonight from a trip to Los Angeles I took in October of last year. I had a really big shoot scheduled with a famous cosplay model and the night before, she flaked. This is an all too common occurrence in LA, not just for shoots; for everything. It’s one of LA’s most toxic traits as a culture. On zero noticed, I reached out to an Instagram friend named Bettie Pagan. We started following each other a few years ago and had always talked about shooting together. I asked her how spontaneous she could be with a midnight shoot.
Bettie pulled it together, which is pretty remarkable. She was finishing at her day job, ran home and threw together two outfits. I had dresses pulled from La Femme En Noir and she met me at the Gables estate in Pasadena. It was cathartic because I was trying to sort some bad energy from the other model canceling. Bettie really helped calm me because she’s an experienced model and the photos were coming out great from the very first frames. She was cool as Hell, too. We saw eye to eye on almost all the clown-like socio-political theater in this world.
We moved throughout the mansion captured photos from room to room. I learned that although she was living in Los Angeles, she was originally from Philadelphia; a city that I lived and worked in for years in my 20’s and still has a part of my heart. Her boyfriend is a wildly talented SFX make up artist that’s worked for Weta, which felt like I was making another friend just from us talking during the session. I love the photos. There are more to come from this shoot, but above all, I was reminded of the good, reliable people that are able to offset the bad.
