The fifth painting is most interesting as it leaves you contesting if it was a male or female portrait but then I feel this is the painters intention and it shows his level of mastery.

Judging by the clothes, it's a young woman I'd say. But keep in mind, backbin those days not all the women were pretty. But as you say, who knows what the painter wanted.
