Watch Tower
Seid gegrüßt, Freunde der Dunkelheit. Heute zeige ich euch einige Bilder eines ehemaligen Grenzturmes an der Ostseeküste auf dem Gebiet der ehemaligen DDR. Zwei Exemplare dieser Türme sind erhalten geblieben. Der eine steht mitten in Kühlungsborn und dient als Museum. Der zweite steht einige Kilometer entfernt in Börgerende. Diesen habe ich in der Nacht mit meinen Taschenlampen beleuchtet und fotografiert.
Die Bezeichnung BT11 bedeutet Beobachtungsturm mit einer Höhe von 11 Metern. Diese Türme wurden modular gebaut in dem Betonringe übereinander gestapelt wurde. Es gab auch andere Bauarten, wie BT9. Diese sind allerdings nicht zylindrisch, sondern rechteckig. Der Turm in Börgerende ist verschlossen und mit einem Zaun gesichert. Bei meinem Besuch im Sommer war der Turm mit Brombeersträuchern zugewuchert. Ich kam also nicht in den Turm hinein.
Greetings, friends of darkness. Today I'm showing you some pictures of a former border tower on the Baltic coast in the former GDR. Two of these towers have been preserved. One stands in the centre of Kühlungsborn and serves as a museum. The second is a few kilometres away in Börgerende. I illuminated and photographed this one at night with my torches.
The name BT11 means observation tower with a height of 11 metres. These towers were built modularly by stacking concrete rings on top of each other. There were also other types, such as BT9. However, these are not cylindrical, but rectangular. The tower in Börgerende is locked and secured with a fence. During my visit in summer, the tower was overgrown with brambles. So I couldn't get into the tower.

Für das erste Bild stellte ich die Kamera auf und beleuchtete den Turm mit der Emisar D4V2 und blauem Farbfilter. Die Bäume beleuchtete ich dann ohne Farbfilter. Ein Teil des Lichts an den Bäumen stammt von dem vorbeifahrenden Auto.
For the first picture, I set up the camera and illuminated the tower with the Emisar D4V2 and a blue colour filter. I then illuminated the trees without the colour filter. Some of the light on the trees comes from the passing car.

Im Anschluss versuchte ich die Milchstraße aufzunehmen. Das war aus dieser Position nicht ganz so einfach. Die Straßenlaternen im nahen Ort Börgerende leuchteten die meisten Sterne aus dem Bild.
I then tried to take a picture of the Milky Way. It wasn't quite so easy from this position. The streetlights in the nearby town of Börgerende illuminated most of the stars out of the picture.

Ich platzierte dann die Kamera so nah wie möglich am Turm. Aus diese Position bekam ich allerdings die Milchstraße nicht ins Bild.

Also ging ich mit der Kamera zum Strand um den Turm von der anderen Seite zu fotografieren. Das funktionierte schon besser. Das Licht aus Heiligendamm unterhalb der Milchstraße ist nicht sehr störend. Heiligendamm ist ca. 2km entfernt. Die Szene habe ich wieder mit der Emisar D4V2 beleuchtet. Das Licht auf der linken Seite des Turms stammt von den Straßenlaternen in Börgerende.
So I went to the beach with my camera to photograph the tower from the other side. That worked better. The light from Heiligendamm below the Milky Way is not very disturbing. Heiligendamm is about 2km away. I lit the scene again with the Emisar D4V2. The light on the left-hand side of the tower comes from the street lamps in Börgerende.

In diesem Bild sieht man rechts die Lichter des mondänen Seebades Heiligendamm. Einige werden sich sicher erinnern, 2007 wurde dort unter recht viel Protest der G8 Gipfel abgehalten.
In this picture you can see the lights of the fashionable seaside resort of Heiligendamm on the right. Some of you will no doubt remember that the G8 summit was held there in 2007 to much protest.

Es zogen immer Wolken auf. Ich packte also meine Ausrüstung zusammen und fuhr zurück. Ich habe in dieser Nacht einige gute Bilder aufgenommen. Das ist nicht immer so. Beim Fotografieren des nächtlichen Sternenhimmels kann so viel schief gehen. Man ist abhängig vom Wetter, Mond, Lichtverschmutzung und der Position der Milchstraße. Nur wenn das alles zusammenpasst und man mit den richtigen Kameraeinstellungen arbeitet und den Fokus sauber einstellt, gelingen solche Bilder. Die vielen Fehlversuche bekommt der Betrachter gewöhnlich nicht zu sehen.
Allzeit gutes Licht
Clouds were always gathering. So I packed up my equipment and drove back. I took some good pictures that night. That's not always the case. So many things can go wrong when photographing the night sky. You are dependent on the weather, the moon, light pollution and the position of the Milky Way. Only when all of these factors work together and you work with the right camera settings and set the focus correctly can you take such pictures. The viewer usually doesn't get to see the many failed attempts.
