First Test of my New CRT
Seid gegrüßt, Freunde der Lichtmalerei. In den letzten beiden Nächten war ich gemeinsam mit @stepko . @candelart und Hans Roufflair auf einem verlassenen Flugplatz der Sowjetarmee in Brandenburg unterwegs. Ich danke euch für diesen wunderbaren Ausflug.
Greetings, friends of light painting. In the last two nights I was together with @stepko . @candelart and Hans Roufflair at an abandoned Soviet Army airfield in Brandenburg. Thank you for this wonderful trip.

Location
Auf einem sehr großen Gelände findet man recht viele Hinterlassenschaften der Sowjetarmee, so wie mehrer UK20 Hangar. In diesen standen bis zum Abzug der Truppen Kampfflugzeuge, MiG 17 und MiG 19, wenn ich mich nicht irre. Die meisten der Hangar sind entweder voller Müll oder werden als Lager für Baumaterialien genutzt. Einige dienen als Winterquartier für Fledermäuse. Wie wollten natürlich den Winterschlaf der Fledermäuse nicht stören. Zwei Hangar sind recht aufgeräumt, frei zugänglich und ohne Fledermäuse. Einiger der beiden Hangar liegt allerdings nah an der Straße. Das Licht vorbeifahrender Autos hätte uns wahrscheinlich unser Bilder versaut.
On a very large area you can find quite a lot of remains of the Soviet army, such as several UK20 hangars. Until the withdrawal of the troops, these were used for fighter planes, MiG 17 and MiG 19, if I'm not mistaken. Most of the hangars are either full of rubbish or are used to store building materials. Some serve as winter quarters for bats. Naturally, we didn't want to disturb the bats' hibernation. Two hangars are quite tidy, freely accessible and without bats. However, one of the two hangars is close to the road. The light from passing cars would probably have spoilt our pictures.
Das Rollfeld vor den Hangar ist mittlerweile abgebrochen, der meiste Schutt wurde abtransportiert. Das ist recht unwegsam. Mit schwerem Gepäck ist der Weg dorthin recht beschwerlich.
The tarmac in front of the hangar has now been demolished and most of the rubble has been removed. It is quite impassable. Getting there with heavy luggage is quite arduous.
Camera Rotation Tool
Vor einigen Wochen hatte ich ein neues Camera Rotation Tool gebaut. Basis ist ein großes Kugellager. Ich habe die anderen Teile auf dem 3D Drucker gedruckt. Das Funktionsprinzip ist einfach. Die äußere Seite wird auf dem Stativ montiert, an die innere Seite kommt dann die Kamera. Die optische Achse ist somit genau auf der Rotationsachse, wenn die Maße der gedruckten Teile stimmen. Die Kamera wird mit einer Schraube am FTZ Adapter befestigt. Auf eine Arca Swiss Klemme habe ich verzichtet, weil ich nicht sicherstellen konnte, dass dann letztendlich die Höhe genau stimmt. Arretiert wird das mit einem Bolzen M3. Diese Lösung ist nicht gut. Der Metallbolzen bohrt sich immer mehr in den Kunststoff.
A few weeks ago I built a new camera rotation tool. The basis is a large ball bearing. I printed the other parts on the 3D printer. The functional principle is simple. The outer side is mounted on the tripod, the camera is then attached to the inner side. The optical axis is therefore exactly on the axis of rotation if the dimensions of the printed parts are correct. The camera is attached to the FTZ adapter with a screw. I didn't use an Arca Swiss clamp because I couldn't be sure that the height would be exactly right in the end. It is locked with an M3 bolt. This solution is not good. The metal bolt drills more and more into the plastic.
Die innere Öffnung des CRT hat einen Durchmesser von 70 mm. Das Laowa 12/2,8 passt gerade so durch die Öffnung. Ich muss zuerst das CRT an die Kamera schrauben und dann das Objektiv an die Kamera stecken. Der Durchmesser der fest verbauten Gegenlichtblende ist zu groß um das CRT darüber schieben zu können. Das Tool ist im Moment ein Prototyp, einige Sachen muss ich noch verbessern.
Der erste Test war allerdings sehr vielversprechend. Das Tool läuft butterweich und sehr präzise.
The inner aperture of the CRT has a diameter of 70 mm. The Laowa 12/2.8 just fits through the opening. I first have to screw the CRT to the camera and then attach the lens to the camera. The diameter of the fixed lens hood is too large to be able to slide the CRT over it. The tool is a prototype at the moment, I still need to improve a few things.
However, the first test was very promising. The tool runs smoothly and very precisely.
Light Painting
Nachdem ich das Stativ mit dem montierten Camera Rotation Tool und Kamera aufgestellt hatte, versuchte ich die Mitte des Hangars in die Bildmitte zu bekommen. Das ist nicht ganz so einfach. Die Form das Hangars erscheint zwar auf den ersten Blick symmetrisch, ist es aber nicht.
After I had set up the tripod with the camera rotation tool and camera mounted, I tried to get the centre of the hangar in the centre of the picture. This is not quite so easy. Although the shape of the hangar appears symmetrical at first glance, it is not.
Nach einigem hin- und herschieben des Stativs war ich zufrieden mit der Ausrichtung. Im nächsten Schritt platzierte ich eine Obstschale, welche mir @gunnarheilmann geschenkt hat vor der Kamera. @stepko beleuchtete diese und ich drehte die Kamera in Schritten von 30° um die optische Achse.
After moving the tripod back and forth a few times, I was happy with the alignment. In the next step, I placed a fruit bowl that @gunnarheilmann had given me in front of the camera. @stepko illuminated it and I rotated the camera around the optical axis in steps of 30°.
Im nächsten Schritt leuchtete ich die Seiten des Hangars mit der Emisar D4K und blauem Farbfilter an. Ich rotierte dann die Kamera um 180° und wiederholte die Ausleuchtung. Danach stellte sich unser Light Painting Super Model Hans an seine Position. Ich beleuchtete ihm mit dem Scanner von vorn, Mit einer LEP Lampe beleuchtet ich ihn von hinten. Im letzten Schritt blies ich Nebel in den Hangar leuchtet dann mit der popelgrünen Convoy S2 in Richtung Kamera.
In the next step, I illuminated the sides of the hangar with the Emisar D4K and a blue colour filter. I then rotated the camera by 180° and repeated the lighting. Then our Light Painting Super Model Hans stood in his position. I illuminated him from the front with the scanner and from behind with a LEP lamp. In the final step, I blew fog into the hangar and then shone the poplar green Convoy S2 towards the camera.

Der erste Versuch war zu hell. Von der Salatschüssel war nichts zu sehen. Ich reduzierte den ISO auf 200 und wiederholte das ganze Prozedere. Das Ergebnis seht ihr oben im Titelbild.
Im Anschluss machten dann die Kollegen einige Bilder, die sie euch hoffentlich bald hier präsentieren werden. Bis dahin allzeit gutes Licht.
The first attempt was too bright. Nothing could be seen of the salad bowl. I reduced the ISO to 200 and repeated the whole procedure. You can see the result in the cover picture above.
