ROTATING LIGHTS

After the wild fumbling around in the last post, things are a bit more coordinated today. I rotated several lights in a circle and then photographed the rotation. Basically, this is quite an easy exercise once you get the hang of it.

Nach dem wilden Rumgefuchtel im letzten Post geht es heute etwas koordinierter zu. Ich habe mehrere Lichter im Kreis gedreht und die Drehung dann fotografiert. Grundsätzlich ist das eine recht einfache Übung, wenn man den Dreh erstmal raus hat.

I had attached the turning aid to a tripod. Shooting by hand usually goes wrong. Besides, the heavy weight quickly makes the arm lame. Several torches with different light brushes, blades made of acrylic glass, empty bubble containers, empty film cans, etc. were attached to the turning aid. In or on some of the light brushes I had attached metallic pipe cleaners in different colours. This is where the light traces of copper, metallic red and blue come from.

Die Drehhilfe hatte ich auf einem Stativ befestigt. Aus der Hand zu drehen geht meist schief. Außerdem wird durch das hohe Gewicht der Arm schnell lahm. An der Drehhilfe waren mehrere Taschenlampen mit verschiedenen Lichtpinseln befestigt, Blades aus, Acrylglas, leere Seifenblasenbehälter, leere Filmdosen usw.. In oder an einigen der Lichtpinsel hatte ich Metallic Pfeifenreiniger in verschieden Farben befestigt. Daher kommen die Lichtspuren aus Kupfer, dem metallischen Rot und Blau.

In this image I had changed the zoom and had not taken some of the light trails in one full rotation. This requires some concentration and precision.

Bei diesem Bild hatte ich den Zoom verändert und einige der Lichtspuren nicht in einer vollen Umdrehung aufgenommen. Das erfordert einige Konzentration und Präzision.

Especially when some of the light traces overlap, you have to pay close attention to the point at which the cover is taken off the lens and put back on. It doesn't work so well at high rotation speed, especially if you are an old bone like me.

Gerade wenn sich einige der Lichtspuren überlagern, muss man genau darauf achten, an welcher Stelle die Abdeckung vom Objektiv genommen und wieder aufgesetzt wird. Bei hoher Drehgeschwindigkeit funktioniert das nicht so gut, vor allem, wenn man schon so ein alter Knochen ist wie ich.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
