Rotating the Tree - Camera Rotation Light Painting on HIVE

Sundown and Stars

Hello friends of darkness. I'm spending some time in Mecklenburg at the moment, in the middle of nowhere. Peace, nature and relaxation. There are some trees by a lake nearby. I rotated one tree here during the blue hour. During a single exposure I rotated the camera around the optical axis. During the rotation I had covered the lens with a black cap.

As it was still quite bright, I chose ISO 50 and f16. I triggered the camera and after about 1 second covered the lens, then rotated the camera around the optical axis, then covered the lens again for 1 second and finished the exposure.

This is what the scene looked like without camera rotation.

I changed position and took a few more camera rotation pictures.

📷 Nikon D750 - Laowa 12/2,8 - f2,8 - ISO 400 - 30 seconds

When it was dark and the stars became visible, I took this picture. I lit the scene with the Emisar D4K and the Noctigon DM11. Since the exposure time was limited to 30 seconds, it was not that easy. It took me a few tries until the illumination was as I had imagined. It was getting cold and damp. I packed up the camera and the torches and headed back.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.

This is a great photo - it broke my brain a little bit when I first saw it 🤣 I didn't know you could do this, I've never tried that before but can see how the double exposure allows it, how did you tilt the camera in situ? It must have been mounted on a tripod yes? What a cool idea. I'm not that creative with my photography, but it's probably because I don't know all the things my camera can actually do on full manual. I still have a lot to learn. Now I'm intrigued and need to learn more.

Thanks. I use a DIY rotation tool to rotate the camera.

Ah ok. I'm asking because I'm way out of date of what's on the market these days. It's dangerous for me to look them up because I'll bankrupt myself 🤣

You can use a Gimbal for camera rotation. 😁

Ooh wow!
The pictures are really amazing
I think Nikon cameras are very lovely
Nice capture!
