First Round with my New Star Tracker

Seid gegrüßt, Freunde des nächtlichen Sternenhimmels. Endlich gab es nach vielen Wochen wieder mal eine sternenklare Nacht. Endlich konnte ich den neuen Star Tracker, den ich vor einiger Zeit gebaut habe, in freier Wildbahn testen. Die Bedingungen waren nicht gerade gut. Der Mond stand recht hoch am Himmel und überstrahlte somit das Licht vieler Sterne. Für einen ersten Test des Start Trackers genügte das aber. Und wie der Titel es bereits erahnen lässt, der eigentliche Hauptgrund für das Fotografieren des nächtlichen Sternenhimmels, ist die Ruhe die damit verbunden ist. Ich war an einer stillgelegten Brücke im Nirgendwo. Von Zivilisationsgeräuschen blieb ich verschont. Das Röhren eines Hirsches, das Bellen der Füchse und das Geschrei der Kraniche störten die Ruhe an diesem Ort kaum. Der große Hirsch sprang mir auf dem Rückweg vor das Auto. Glücklicherweise haben wir beide, und auch das japanische Dünnblechauto, diese Begegnung unbeschadet überstanden. Nach einer Schrecksekunde ging der Hirsch wieder seines Weges.
Greetings, friends of the starry night sky. Finally, after many weeks, there was a starry night again. I was finally able to test the new star tracker that I built some time ago in the wild. The conditions were not exactly good. The moon was quite high in the sky and therefore outshone the light of many stars. But that was enough for a first test of the Start Tracker. And as the title suggests, the main reason for photographing the starry sky at night is the peace and quiet that comes with it. I was at a disused bridge in the middle of nowhere. I was spared the sounds of civilisation. The roaring of a stag, the barking of foxes and the cries of cranes hardly disturbed the peace and quiet of this place. The big stag jumped in front of my car on the way back. Fortunately, we both survived this encounter unscathed, as did the Japanese thin metal car. After a moment of shock, the deer went on its way again.
Zuerst machte ich einige Bilder ohne den Start Tracker, wie das Titelbild. Ich war mir nicht sicher, ob der Star Tracker funktioniert und ich wollte nicht ohne Bilder wieder nach Hause fahren. Anschließend montierte ich den Star Tracker auf dem Stativ und richtete diesen mithilfe des Smartphones auf den Polarstern aus. Das ist leider nicht besonders Präzise. Das Polarscope hätte hier wesentlich bessere Dienste geleistet. Das lag aber zusammen mit dem anderen Star Tracker warm und trocken zu Hause.
At first I took some pictures without the start tracker, like the cover picture. I wasn't sure whether the Star Tracker would work and I didn't want to go home without any pictures. I then mounted the Star Tracker on the tripod and aligned it with Polaris using my smartphone. Unfortunately, this is not particularly precise. The Polarscope would have done a much better job here. However, it was kept warm and dry at home together with the other Star Tracker.

Wie man an diesem Bild gut sehen kann, funktionierte die Nachführung nicht vernünftig. Entweder war der Star Tracker nicht genau auf den Polarstern gerichtet oder die Drehgeschwindigkeit passt nicht oder beides. Hier noch ein 100 % Crop aus der rechten oberen Ecke des Bildes.
As you can see from this picture, the tracking did not work properly. Either the star tracker was not exactly aligned with Polaris or the rotation speed did not match or both. Here is a 100 % crop from the top right corner of the image.
Die Sterne sind nicht ansatzweise rund. Ich versuchte dann den Star Tracker erneut auszurichten. Die Ergebnisse wurden allerdings nicht viel besser. Eine weitere Schwachstelle ist der verwendete 3-Wege Getriebeneiger, auf dem ich den Star Tracker montiert hatte. Mit dem Tracker, dem Kugelkopf und der Kamera wackelte der Stativkopf. Das dürfte zusätzlich für kleine Verwacklungen im Bild gesorgt haben. Es gibt also noch mehrere Baustellen mit dem neuen Star Tracker.
The stars are not nearly round. I then tried to align the star tracker again. However, the results were not much better. Another weak point was the 3-way geared panhead on which I had mounted the Star Tracker. The tripod head wobbled with the tracker, the ball head and the camera. This may also have caused a little camera shake in the picture. So there are still several issues with the new Star Tracker.
Nach mehreren Versuchen habe ich dann den Star Tracker wieder im Fotorucksack verstaut und habe noch ein Panorama der Szene aufgenommen. Dieses besteht aus zwei Reihen mit jeweils 6 Panels. Für jedes Panel habe ich 8 Aufnahmen mit jeweils 20 Sekunden Belichtungszeit gemacht. Am Computer habe ich dann die jeweils 8 Aufnahmen mit Sequator gestackt, mit Hugin das Panorama gestitcht und dieses dann mit Darktable bearbeitet.
After several attempts, I put the Star Tracker back in my photo backpack and took another panorama of the scene. This consists of two rows of 6 panels each. I took 8 shots for each panel, each with an exposure time of 20 seconds. On the computer I then stacked the 8 shots with Sequator, stitched the panorama with Hugin and then edited it with Darktable.

Nun werde ich als Erstes die Drehgeschwindigkeit des Star Tracker nochmals überprüfen. Dafür brauche ich keine sternenklare Nacht, das funktioniert auch in der warmen Küche. Wenn das passt kann nur eine schlechte Ausrichtung auf den Polarstern die Ursache für die schlechten Ergebnisse sein. Sobald der Star Tracker gut funktioniert werde ich einen Beitrag über den Tracker schreiben. Das Teil ist recht klein und leicht. Die Materialkosten lagen bei ca. 75€. Somit wäre das eine gute Alternative zu kommerziellen Produkten.
Bis dahin wünsche ich allzeit gutes Licht.
The first thing I'm going to do now is check the rotation speed of the Star Tracker again. I don't need a starry night for this, it also works in a warm kitchen. If this is the case, the only reason for the poor results can be poor alignment with Polaris. As soon as the Star Tracker is working well I will write an article about it. The part is quite small and light. The material costs were around €75. This would therefore be a good alternative to commercial products.
