The Lost Image - Light Painting Photography on HIVE

ANOTHER ROUND AT THE ABANDONED AIRFIELD

This weekend we went to the abandoned airfield one more time. With us were @gunnarheilmann, Hans, Jennifer, Dominic and Swen. Last time, a picture disappeared from my memory card. I have no idea at all why the picture disappeared. So I repeated it yesterday. The hangar is huge. It took me almost 10 minutes to illuminate it. The terrain is very rough. So it was not an easy task. On the third try, the picture was half as I had imagined.

An diesem Wochenende waren wir ein weiteres Mal auf dem verlassenen Flugplatz unterwegs. Dabei waren @gunnarheilmann, Hans, Jennifer, Dominic und Swen. Beim letzten Mal ist ein Bild von meiner Speicherkarte verschwunden. Ich habe überhaupt keine Ahnung aus welchem Grund das Bild verschwunden ist. Also habe ich gestern wiederholt. Der Hangar ist riesengroß. Zur Ausleuchtung habe ich fast 10 Minuten gebraucht. Das Gelände ist sehr unwegsam. Das war also keine einfache Aufgabe. Beim dritten Versuch war das Bild so halbwegs wie ich es mir vorgestellt hatte.

After the picture was finished I made another version. Here I turned the camera 180° around the optical axis during the exposure. As always, the picture was taken in a single exposure. Apart from the 16:9 cut, the image has not been processed on the computer.

Nachdem das Bild fertig war habe ich eine weitere Version gemacht. Hier habe ich während der Belichtung die Kamera um 180° um die optische Achse gedreht. Wie immer ist das Bild in einer einzelnen Belichtung entstanden. Vom 16:9 Schnitt abgesehen ist das Bild nicht am Computer bearbeitet.

Most people think I'm crazy. I spend hours packing up the equipment, load all the stuff into the car, drive 1.5 hours to the location, walk over the rough airfield with a torch for over 2 hours, 1.5 hours driving back and then unpack everything again. And the result is a single light painting, or if it doesn't go so well, none at all. In the meantime I have gained so much experience that I can take several good pictures in one night.

And now there are some impressions in daylight.

Die meisten Menschen halten mich für verrückt. Ich packe stundenlang die Ausrüstung zusammen, lade den ganzen Kram ins Auto, fahre 1,5 Stunden zur Location, laufe über 2 Stunden mit der Taschenlampe über den unwegsamen Flugplatz, 1,5 Stunden Rückfahrt und dann alles wieder auspacken. Und das Ergebnis ist ein einziges Light Painting, oder wenn es nicht so gut läuft, auch gar keins. Mittlerweile habe ich soviel Erfahrungen gesammelt, dass mir in einer Nacht auch mehrere gute Bilder gelingen.

Und nun gibt es noch einige Eindrücke bei Tageslicht.

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?

Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.

Wow. That is an impressive location and the rotation works a treat. Love the building with the open roof too. Great stuff mate.

Thanks mate. Yes, it's a very cool location. It's a pity that the buildings will be demolished soon.

Progress is not good for Lightpainters :). Glad you got to shoot it before it gets knocked down.

We go there again in some weeks. 😊 But I think this will be our last chance.

I took a few videos and drone footage and created a small Location check and the making of. Mostly about the stuff I did but you get to see the location inside and out. You just need to hurry to come and visit. Maybe you are fast enough and we can still go all together!
