The Fascination of Trees
Seid gegrüßt, Freunde des nächtlichen Sternenhimmels. Fast jedes Mal, wenn ich einen freistehenden Baum sehe, hab ich den Drang ein Foto von diesem zu machen. Woher diese Faszination kommt, vermag ich gar nicht zu sagen. Sicher gibt es viele Menschen, die sich die Bilder dann anschauen und mit den Schultern zucken. Es ist ja nur ein Baum zu sehen.
Greetings, friends of the starry night sky. Almost every time I see a solitary tree, I have the urge to take a photo of it. I can't say where this fascination comes from. I'm sure there are many people who look at the pictures and shrug their shoulders. After all, there's only one tree to see.

Hätte ich diesen Baum in der Mittagssonne fotografiert, wäre das Bild wahrscheinlich tatsächlich recht belanglos. Durch die Milchstraße, die sich über dem Baum ausbreitet, wird der Baum schon ganz gut in Szene gesetzt. Nur die Milchstraße wäre für mich kein spannendes Motiv, egal wie gut sie technisch abgebildet wird. Das Motiv ist der Baum. Die Milchstraße ist die passende, spannende Leinwand. Nicht mehr, aber auch nicht weniger.
Technisch war dieses Bild recht anspruchsvoll. Ich nahm 14 einzelne Bilder auf, angefangen bei restlichem Sonnenlicht bis es dann vollkommen dunkel war. Also vollkommen dunkel war es auch mitten im Nirgendwo in Mecklenburg nicht. Ein Teil des Lichtes am Horizont stammt von künstlichen Lichtquellen, wie Straßenlaternen und vorbei fahrenden Autos. Den Baum und den Vordergrund des Bildes habe ich mit einer Taschenlampe beleuchtet, ansonsten wäre dort alles schwarz. All diese Bilder habe ich in dann in Sequator zu einem Bild vereint.
If I had photographed this tree in the midday sun, the picture would probably have been quite insignificant. The Milky Way, which spreads out above the tree, sets the scene quite well. Only the Milky Way would not be an exciting motif for me, no matter how well it is depicted technically. The motif is the tree. The Milky Way is the matching, exciting canvas. No more, but also no less.
Technically, this picture was quite challenging. I took 14 individual pictures, starting with residual sunlight until it was completely dark. It wasn't completely dark, even in the middle of nowhere in Mecklenburg. Some of the light on the horizon comes from artificial light sources, such as street lamps and passing cars. I illuminated the tree and the foreground of the picture with a torch, otherwise everything there would be black. I then combined all these images into one picture in Sequator.

Wie man an diesem Bild sehen kann, gelingen Aufnahmen der Milchstraße auch in einer Belichtung. Hier habe ich 30 Sekunden belichtet. Die ersten Strahlen der Sonne erhellten den Horizont. Auch hier habe ich die Szene wieder mit der Taschenlampe aufgehellt. In 30 Sekunden war das keine einfache Übung.
As you can see from this picture, images of the Milky Way can also be taken in one exposure. Here I exposed for 30 seconds. The first rays of the sun lit up the horizon. Once again, I brightened up the scene with the torch. In 30 seconds, this was no easy exercise.

Eine Stunde vorher sah die Szene so aus. Das orange Licht am Horizont war mit bloßem Auge kaum sichtbar. Die Kamera hat das allerdings sehr gut "gesehen". Es empfiehlt sich, mehrere Bilder mit verschiedenen Einstellungen aufzunehmen. Und wenn man dann den passenden ISO Wert gefunden hat, ist es gut 6 bis 8 Bilder mit dieser Einstellung aufzunehmen um dann später die Möglichkeit zu haben, diese Bilder zu stacken.
An hour earlier, the scene looked like this. The orange light on the horizon was barely visible to the naked eye. However, the camera "saw" it very well. It is advisable to take several pictures with different settings. And once you have found the right ISO value, it is a good idea to take 6 to 8 pictures with this setting so that you have the option of stacking these pictures later.

Das letzte Bild des heutigen Beitrages habe ich ebenfalls in einer Belichtung aufgenommen. Die Schwierigkeit bestand darin, im dichten Wald die Kamera so aufzustellen, dass die Milchstraße an der Stelle sichtbar wird, an der ich sie haben wollte. Dieses Bild habe ich im Gespensterwald in Nienhagen aufgenommen. Die Lichtverschmutzung durch das nahe gelegene Rostock war recht hoch. Aber auch wenn der Kontrast zwischen Himmel und Sterne etwas darunter leidet, ist doch die Milchstraße gut zu erkennen. Auch in Regionen mit Bortle 3 oder 4 ist es oft auch ohne spezielle Ausrüstung, wie Nachführung oder Schmallband-Passfilter, möglich eindrucksvolle Bilder der Milchstraße aufzunehmen.
I also took the last picture in today's post in one exposure. The difficulty was to position the camera in the dense forest so that the Milky Way was visible where I wanted it to be. I took this picture in the Gespensterwald in Nienhagen. The light pollution from nearby Rostock was quite high. But even if the contrast between the sky and the stars suffers somewhat, the Milky Way is still easy to recognise. Even in regions with Bortle 3 or 4, it is often possible to capture impressive images of the Milky Way without special equipment such as tracking or narrow-band pass filters.
