Some time ago, my wife and I visited a photography exhibition in Istanbul, Türkiye. It was held at the Istanbul Modern Art Museum, featuring the works of İzzet Keribar, a renowned Turkish photographer. Here is a quick info:
The first of the six sections within the exhibition showcases Keribar's photographs from the 1950s, featuring images of Istanbul's rapidly evolving street life and photographs of urban and rural settings in South Korea. The second part presents works documenting everyday life in various Istanbul neighborhoods starting from the 1980s. The third and fourth sections explore nature and urban landscapes, showcasing Keribar's ability to transform the “ordinary” into the “extraordinary” through his masterful use of natural light and color. These images were captured during his travels throughout Türkiye and abroad. The fifth section features portraits taken by the artist in various parts of the world, while the final section highlights Keribar's unique semi-abstract images.

After spending about 4–5 hours exploring the entire museum, we decided to take a walk and have lunch before heading home. It was a cold day for a seaside walk, but like everyone else out there, we felt that fresh air was always worth the challenge. 🙂 After a while, we found a restaurant for lunch, and this photo series was born from that moment. I took same subject from the same angle, but I believe each shot has different feeling.
Outside of the restaurant there were heaters with glass covers and lovely flames flickering within. They were fighting against the chilly air to keep the customers warm and happy.
While slowly having my lunch I noticed her. A woman, deep in conversation with her partner. I don’t know what she was talking about, but the way she was framed by the heater’s glass and the flames beside her, made the scene look powerful to me. It was like the fire was expressing her emotions—was she angry, passionate, or just lost in thought? I couldn’t tell, but the way the flames moved next to her face made it feel like they were connected.
I was inside the restaurant, looking through the window when I took these photos. There were yellow LED decorations before me, small glowing orbs floating in the frame. They added a dreamy effect, and boosted her feelings. The warm lights blurred, blending with the fire, making her emotions seem even stronger.
Each shot felt different. Sometimes the fire looked wild, as if mirroring strong emotions, and sometimes it was softer, almost gentle. The people in the background added more to the story. What were they feeling? Were they happy, lost in thought, or simply enjoying the moment? The contrast of warm and cold in these images is another thing I liked. The energy of the flames against the distant, cool background.
I was just having my lunch, but observing the world took me away. I found something special and I am glad that I had my camera with me. Please find below the rest of the shots that I wanted to share with you.
