Long exposure and a patient cat

That early morning, the rain made the city captive in soft, muted colors. The people were still at home, maybe some hour before to the wage earning rush. Rain drops were seeping down from the branches of trees, dripping from the edges of railings, and pooling on the walk way. It was not a heavy rain though. As I was walking along the seaside, I got my camera ready for slow shutter keeping it ready for any scene that may pop up... Attached my mini-tripod on it.

And then I saw it.

A cat, sleeping on the wooden railing like it had been there all night. Its fur was patterned in stripes that well blended into the rainy scene. It was sitting, perfectly balanced, tail curled neatly around the body, keeping the eyes shut as if it ignored all the upcoming morning rush of the people passing by. For a moment, it felt like the only thing in the world not rushing somewhere.

I was coming from the backside of the cat and as soon as I spotted it on the handrail, I rushed to the front and praying on the way for it to stay still there.

I stopped in front of it, say a half meter away, raising my camera almost instinctively, setting my tripod over the hand rail. The story just appeared in my mind. Because of the slow shutter, blurred silhouettes of people hurrying would imply a motion. The cat, on the other hand, if it continues to sleep, would stay sharp and clear which in turn might symbolize an ignoring character in the midst of a rushing rituals of people.

Luckily, the stray cat kept still and I was able took some photos, adjusting my focus, and coming closer and closer to it and trying to capture what I was feeling at that moment while I was waiting for different people to pass. But it seemed the cat wasn't bothered at all. It was present in some way, in it's unique way...I spent like 30 minutes with it.

When I finally walked away, I looked back. The cat was still there, like a monument of stillness, only the furs make it look alive. Here I thank the cat again for being a model for me. Coming back to home, I played with the muted colors and increased the vibrancy during post editing.

All the best...
