Cuba, as a Caribbean island, has many of these special places, but there is one in particular that I love, and today I want to tell you about it.
It is the Lomas de Banao Ecological Reserve (21°53′38.61′′ N, 79°37′41.57′′ W). It is in the center of the country, in an impressive mountain range known as El Escambray. This place is like a sanctuary of biodiversity, full of trails where you come across unexpected things at every turn. You are never really done exploring.

Quienes hacemos fotografía de naturaleza sabemos que algunos lugares nos atrapan el alma, y se quedan ahí para siempre. A veces es por la paz que encontramos en ellos, a veces por la diversidad increíble que ofrecen en flora y fauna. Cuba, como isla caribeña, tiene muchos de estos rincones especiales, pero hay uno en particular que me encanta, y hoy quiero contarles sobre él.
Se trata de la Reserva Ecológica Lomas de Banao (21°53′38.61′′ N, 79°37′41.57′′ W). Está en el centro del país, en una cadena montañosa impresionante conocida como El Escambray. Este lugar es como un santuario de biodiversidad, lleno de senderos donde te topas con cosas inesperadas a cada paso. Nunca se termina de explorar realmente.
Some time ago, a group of us photographers got together in Lomas de Banao to do a nature photography workshop. And well, any excuse is a good one to get into the forest and capture something special, right? There were many opportunities, and we made the most of each one.
Of all the photos I took that day, the one that surprised me the most was the one of a hutia resting in the hollow of a tree, it was so relaxed that it didn't even flinch when it saw us! It was a moment that, besides being exciting, was like a reminder of the genuine connection we can have with nature if we know how to observe.
Hace un tiempo, un grupo de fotógrafos nos juntamos en Lomas de Banao para hacer un taller de fotografía de naturaleza. Y bueno, cualquier excusa es buena para adentrarse en el bosque y capturar algo especial, ¿no? Hubo muchas oportunidades, y cada una la aprovechamos al máximo.
De todas las fotos que logré ese día, la que más me sorprendió fue la de una jutía descansando en el hueco de un árbol. ¡Estaba tan relajada que ni se inmutó al vernos! Fue un momento que, además de emocionante, fue como un recordatorio de la conexión genuina que podemos tener con la naturaleza si sabemos observar.
