Abgesehen von seiner natürlichen Schönheit ist Kap Arkona auch reich an Geschichte und Kultur. Auf dem Kap befinden sich die Überreste eines slawischen Tempelortes sowie zwei markante Leuchttürme, die als Wahrzeichen der Region dienen.
• Der Schinkelturm: Dieser rechteckige Turm wurde 1827 nach Plänen des berühmten Architekten Karl-Friedrich Schinkel erbaut. Ursprünglich diente er der Absicherung der wichtigen Handelswege in der Ostsee, nachdem die Insel Rügen im Wiener Kongress von Schweden an Preußen gefallen war.
• Der Neue Leuchtturm: Dieser wuchtige, rote Backsteinturm ersetzte 1905 den zu kleinen Schinkelturm. Er steht direkt neben dem alten Leuchtturm und ist bis heute in Betrieb. Alle 17 Sekunden sendet er drei Blitze hinaus auf die Ostsee.
• Der Peilturm: Strenggenommen ist der Peilturm kein Leuchtturm, aber er gehört dennoch dazu.
Besonders gefallen hat mir die Teilstrecke von den Leuchttürmen hinüber zum Fischerdorf Vitt. Dieser charmante Spaziergang bietet nicht nur einen herrlichen Blick auf die Küste und das Meer, sondern führt auch durch malerische Landschaften und bietet Einblicke in die maritime Geschichte der Region. Ein weiteres faszinierendes Merkmal von Kap Arkona ist der "Nordische Garten", ein botanischer Garten, der den Besuchern die Pflanzenwelt der nordischen Region näherbringt und einen einzigartigen Einblick in die Flora und Fauna dieser Gegend bietet.
Aside from its natural beauty, Cape Arkona is also rich in history and culture. On the cape there are the remains of a Slavic temple site as well as two striking lighthouses that serve as landmarks of the region.
• The Schinkel Tower: This rectangular tower was built in 1827 according to plans by the famous architect Karl-Friedrich Schinkel. It originally served to secure the important trade routes in the Baltic Sea after the island of Rügen fell from Sweden to Prussia in the Congress of Vienna.
• The New Lighthouse: This massive, red brick tower replaced the too small Schinkel Tower in 1905. It stands right next to the old lighthouse and is still in operation today. Every 17 seconds it sends three flashes of lightning out to the Baltic Sea.
• The bearing tower: Strictly speaking, the bearing tower is not a lighthouse, but it is still part of it.
I particularly liked the section from the lighthouses over to the fishing village of Vitt. This charming walk not only offers magnificent views of the coast and sea, but also passes through picturesque landscapes and offers insight into the region's maritime history. Another fascinating feature of Cape Arkona is the 'Nordic Garden', a botanical garden that introduces visitors to the flora of the Nordic region and offers a unique insight into the flora and fauna of this area.
