Vrsac - The city "under the tower"

Vrsac is one of the most beautiful Banat towns. It is located in the northeastern part of Serbia, 84 kilometers from Belgrade, and only 14 km from the border with Romania. The city's urban area has a population of 36.000 inhabitants.

Vrsac is one of the oldest cities in Vojvodina with a rich tradition and a turbulent past. It is a city of important cultural institutions, which belong to the most important cultural institutions of Serbia.

The landmark of the city is the Vrsac tower - a fortress built by the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković after the fall of Smederevo in 1439. Its architectural elements are similar to those in the fortress of Smederevo and the fortress around the Manasija monastery. The best preserved of the entire fortification is the Donjon tower, 20 m high, which has been completely restored today.

What the people of Vršac are most proud of are the vineyards and the famous Vršac wine, which is part of this city from the deepest past. The Vršac vineyards belong to the older wine-growing areas of Europe. According to some written data and archeological findings, the beginnings of viticulture date back to the time of the Dacians and Roman rule in this area.

Vrsac got its town hall in 1795, when the two municipalities, Serbian Vrsac and German Vrsac, as two independent administrative units from 1717, united into a town. A new Town Hall building was built in 1859, in neo-gothic style.

Nice architecture.
Feels a bit like my Ljubljana.

Yes. A mixture of Romanesque and Gothic architecture.
