Now I am not going to show you strawberries, as we came to have a look if the Century plant had flowered yet.
I posted about the century plant three months ago, and one would think that it had flowered by now.
Much water had run in the sea, and we really thought that we were going to see some beautiful flowers. As the last time that we saw the plant, it did not have the full head of flowers up high in the sky. But not to be, as you will see in here.
Yep! Look at that, as it has formed the flower head perfectly.
A closer look showed me that the flowers were preparing to open. You can see more about the Century plant in HERE
And here below is a complete look at this beautiful giant plant. So we expect it to flower still in this month.
This is part of the Century plant family (Agavaceae), and it is called a Yucca aloifolia (English name: Spanish bayonet).
Tolerant of salt, and suitable for planting along sandy shores, Spanish Bayonet is easily propagated from sprouts. Several cultivated varieties have striped or colored leaves. The fruit is eaten by birds, and sometimes by humans, and the flowers can be served as a salad, or cooked. Pioneers made rope and string from the fibrous leaves. The roots can be used as soap and shampoo.
*Yucca aloifolia is native to the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States, from southern Virginia south to Florida and west to the Texas Gulf Coast, to Mexico along the Yucatan coast, and to Bermuda, and parts of the Caribbean. *
Yucca aloifolia has become naturalized in the Bahamas, Argentina, Uruguay, Italy, Pakistan, South Africa, Queensland, New South Wales, and Mauritania.
On our way back. A lovely mountain here below.
I like to keep track on the natural development of plants, and in my case, the bigger that they are the better are they for photography. We also know that the century plant has beautiful yellow flowers, and when this one finally blooms, it will be my pleasure to share it with you. The flowers of the "Yucca" plant are also still in an early development stage, and they are also beautiful when they open up.
Sad that the century plant dies after it has flowered, and strangely this reminds me about our human lifetimes. Just like the century plant, we are also planted, start as saplings, and gradually start growing into beautiful plants. Then we also start to flower and we reach the pinnacle of our lives. After that we gradually start to fade into old age to finally pass away. There are many exceptions of course, but I only write this in general. The only true fact is the guarantee that we will all pass away.
The good news is that just like the century plants, new human generations will also follow us.
I hope you have enjoyed the pictures and the story.

Loved the story of the century plant and I have been lucky enough to see a few of them bloom around my neck of the woods (Florida). The comparison to human life is on point...I hadn't thought of it before!

Great that you have also seen a few before, and they are magical plants. I like to search for human life lessons in nature, as nature is an open book when one looks a bit deeper into it.
